Some black tail buffs are hatching from
Wheaten lines. That is what it looks like to me, although I think the body color should be the same, not have light & dark areaas. Of course, she should have feathered shanks as well. sh looks like a Marans, maybe not the best specimen of a black tail buff.

You are lucky he stops at 11. My 5 crow all day long. If I need to end a phone conversation that has gone on to long, I just walk out to the chicken coop

I have a Black Copper chick pipped who I think may be stuck in it's shell, it pipped two days ago but hasn't even started to zip itself free of it's egg.

It is definitely still alive, I just picked the egg up and it cheeped at me from inside. I really don't want to lose this little one, especially after it has struggled and held on for so long.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? What did you do.

BTW- I don't think it is shrink wrapped, I had a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hatch from the same incubator just fine this morning. Temperature is constant and the humidity levels have consistently been 50%-55% during lockdown.

ETA: Today is day 23 for this little one.

Hello, Jeremy. You have a hard decision to make. If it piped that long ago I would help it out if it was me. There is a sticky on helping them out in the incubating and hatching forum. I hope the little guy makes it! I have helped out quite a few birds and most of the time I was happy I did. Good luck.

Jeremy - I have to help most of my BCMs out of their shells. They just get too big to turn and zip. They pip and can't move or the membrane dries up around them. I put the eggs in my styrofoam hovabator on hatch day and fill it with steamy water and mist them and still have to help most out.

I would help it out but at this point it's probably going to be very weak and may not make it but it certainly won't make it if you don't help.

All other eggs will hatch without issue in my Sportsman but not my Marans. My BCM chicks are just too big. Once they pip they seem to grow immediately and get too big for their own shell.

Im with everyone else I would help it slowly but surly if you see blood stop and let it sit in incubator awile I have had that issue more then i would like with ducks hatching. normally I have really good results if I just help alittle here and there but also let them try once I get them going. Hope it helps.

Hello, I saw you were looking for some of the info on the specific colors and such of the Marans. have you tried stopping by the MCCUSA site yet? They have quite a few of the proposed APA standards for the different varieties of Marans. They are still a work in progress but hopefully it will give you a good starting point with having reference materials. You might also want to check out the Australian Marans site...while some of their standards info will vary, it gives a lot of info on the genetics of Marans colors.

Oh...and welcome to the forum! I haven't been around as much the last couple of weeks..in full swing of the spring to do lists and hatches... yikes...

This boy has too much color and lacing . . . . Anyone serious about breeding is most likely not going to want him in their program.
You best hope is to find someone who just wants a rooster for the barnyard. . .

I have had good luck when I have attended monthly chicken swaps in my area and just given the cockerels away.

He has striking color and for someone just looking for a rooster to make barnyard mixes with - -- he will be the cats meow.
