Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nope, he was referring to another post about directly imported stock from France. By the way, since all Marans here should all be bred towards the French standard and any APA standard that may eventually come, it is redundant to call them "French" Marans.

I like this recipe, I wrote it down. Thank you

Thanks! I should add that sweet potato is something that I add to this as well almost everytime that I make it, other times I use fruits like a couple bananas or some cooked apple or a jar of homemade applesauce with no sugar. Sweet potatoes are excellent for young chicks too. I boil them and smash them just like smashed potatoes without milk or butter (unless I am the one eating them, then of course they are smothered in butter and brown sugar...shhhh don't tell the bird they will be jealous

)
I also add a pinch or 2 of ground flax seed.....careful on this one, they do not need too much flax. I also add in some Kelp meal to the gruel 2x a month about a cup in each batch.

I have had animals, horses, bunnies, dogs, cats, goats, rats...and I never would have ever thought that animal lovers and pet owners could be so snoody until my daughter starting showing rabbits a few years ago....and I never would have imagine that chicken people would be snoody either! I am a newbie to BYC and to this thread....so I have no knowledge of what happened previously, just as well from the sounds. Most of us are on here because we love animals and we love our chickens...I am just excited that we have a few marans and are patiently waiting to see who we get to keep....they are a little over a week old and TOO cute!

I like your recipe too. My chickens will be thanking you LOL!
Oooo don't forget the cinnamon on that (mine are baked) sweet potato. I love eating them with a nice grilled steak.

and the Marans thread! Snooty?? Can't recall any snooties here, just a bunch of helpful folks and those that love their Marans with a passion. I've heard that before about rabbit shows, and it's a shame that the kids are the ones that end up suffering for it. It goes the same way and worse in horse and dog shows! Been there, done that...done with it. Rule number one here on this thread...we LOVE pics!! Feel free to post pics of your fuzzy butts and older chooks too! Those that want critiques of their birds should ask for one; those that want to just share pics can do that too. Be aware, if you do ask for a critique, you WILL get an honest evaluation of your bird. Don't misconstrue that as "snooty", and don't take it personally. This breed is still very much in development in this country, so we all need all the help we can get. Everyone's flocks have faults, even the best of lines. The only way to learn is through constructive critisism. Sometimes, it gets a tad "passionate", shall we say? Still, like a family, it comes and goes and all is good. We discuss all kinds of things here, but we always come back to our Marans. Feel free to jump in, enjoy, and learn!

??????? Why is that? FBCM=French Black Copper Marans. All I was saying, is that the French term needs to be dropped, by all that are still using it, because there should be no difference now, as all Marans should be feather shanked. So, in this country, they would just be called Marans; Black Copper Marans, Blue Copper Marans, White Marans, Cuckoo Marans, etc. I believe it was Bev Davis that first brought this subject up here, to drop the "French" from the name. No one was picking on your birds or you, and I'm sorry if you took it that way? Don't let it ruin your hatch for sure!
