Does it depend on the stock? My babies came from Pink's eggs if the says anything... I also noticed on one of my Blacks that she has almost no comb development whatsoever at almost 5 weeks. It will eventually come in I would assume?

Now with my Pink chicks 2 are showing copper already and the others not at all so go figure.

They work really well... Sometimes a rooster for one reason or another cannot get good grip... The right fabric can help them both out... Anything made well should work... If it doesn't work then go to a different manufacturer/size.

These 5 1/2 week olds are my Pink chicks. Some just have smaller combs than others when grown, at 5 weeks, I personally, wouldn't worry about it.

Lisa, I might have overlooked this in your post but ypu should check for a TAKE about 8-9 days after vaccinating, should have a small scab or the vaccine did not TAKE and should be repeated . The tool should be run completely through the wing web for best results. Don

From personal experience, I will tell you that who ever is holding the chick should not hold them close against your body ( ie your chest ladies ) . ... The fork needle will go through the wing and poke you . .. not bad, not break your skin, but you will know . .. .

Keep your hand out of the way on the backside if the wing too!

Don is correct, you should check for takes. . ..

HOWEVER, If you are doing the baby dose and then the adult dose. ... "takes" ( proof that the vaccine was administered correctly and is working) don't happen on the adult dose because they already have antibodies to the vaccine from the baby dose.

I don't check for takes on all chicks. . . I just pick a few to sample and make sure the vaccine was good. I don't worry too much, because everyone will get the booster a couple of months later.

The girls don't mind the ones without wing protectors. I have a couple that have to wear the ones with wing protectors and it took them a couple of days to get over it.


Neighbor toddler calls them "chicken clothing" . .. She wants to pet the ones wearing clothing!

I do a towel for the first 4 - 7 days. Then switch to mulch. When I switched to this method. . . I didn't have to worry about the babies eating tiny pieces of mulch.
After I know that they know what food and water are . . .. I then switch them over to mulch.

RELAX - -- No comb = pullet! BE HAPPY with that !

The comb will come . . . .

Copper is up to the individual. . . . some will have more copper than others AND some will just get it later than others.
