Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have seen Tim's brahmas and that brings me to underline the point.. again: How do we open up the tails and avoid losing the topline of the bird? The outline is the character of the bird and the brahma and the marans have clearly different outlines as do the barred rock... I am sorry sound so retarded...I just can't see it in my mind's eye. (a hole in my program)

The hen is fine if I see what I think I do. I believe there is a space between the two rows of main tail feathers, now if there is no space between the two rows then it would be pinched. I believe as long as there is space they are ok. I main point is a lot of this stuff should of been included in the Standard and we would not be having this discussion now. it would not surpise me if some of these loop holes are not plugged up real soon.

Jan, I believe that if it was possible to put a little U-shape nothing drastic but something that would only be seen from the rear. Will say this also I believe you can show either one and most judge will not know the difference as there is no right or wrong one the way the standard is now. Not a knock on the judge, but if there are 5 U-shape and 2 V-shape in a class and they are equal the winner will be a U-shape. Numbers usually decide what type wins.

... I see what you are saying... I appreciate you patience in indulging me... It isn't explained in the French standard either. So you are right, there is a hole in the program here as well. For me I will take second to your bird just because I tend to go overboard and swing the pendulum to far the wrong way... I would likely end up with U shaped backs not just butts!!!

I am not that refined in my understanding of how to get the presentation you are asking for.. I just don't think I own the makeup in my yard. (we work with what we have)

Wow, have learned a ton here the past few days, mostly that I am in over my head

This is a pic. of my non-breeder quality BCM that Don said somewhere on the bcm thread has a pinched tail. I hope this helps as a good example picture. Also, is she an example of too much Cushion?? She also has a carnation comb if anyone wants to see a pic of that...........

Any ideas? (I did also post on Raising Chicks)
One of my 7wk BCM chicks appears to have really tight wings.

By this, I mean that when her wings are normally folded, the tips of her flight feathers pop up between her wings up by her shoulders.

Is there anything I can do for her?

It does not appear to bother her and I can open the wings, if I want...just not sure what to do for her.
She is, otherwise, healthy and hale appearing.
Any ideas are appreciated (even if it is "leave her alone!")

I know this is off topic but has anyone heard from Debbi today? Hope all is okay with her as pictures from Joplin MO were devestating. Our prayers go out for all the people effected there.

I have not seen anything like that, can you tell if the wing structure has damage of any kind to it? Can you see how the feathers grew in? Curious to know if once the chick molts again if the feathers would lay correctly. I know that the SOP talks about split wing but from the book it is explained as a gap between the primary and secondary feathers.

The wing appears fine - just tight.
She has a hard time folding that wing back up, if she opens it b/c she needs to get the feathers up over her back.

Sometimes they want to point to the ground (inside out) and she has to work at it.

I got her as a Day Old and she was fine in every way....??....
As far as I can tell, it is not a split wing, but - ?? -
