Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I went and got my two Marans pullets today. Only 4 months of age. One I got is all black and big and bossy with clean legs. The other is smaller wearing a pretty gold "necklace" with feathered legs.

She also had two really pretty blue Marans. She said that they are third generation and she now has them so they lay dark eggs. I was really tempted to get one.

In answer to your question a while back about Bill and his lineage......NOPE. Probably never will.....definitely not a Valentine bird....been there, done that and will never own Valentine bird/s EVER AGAIN.

IMO- The Valentine birds that I had were the WORST example of a Marans I have ever seen........not even worthy of being called Marans. The Valentine birds I had looked like leghorns and laid an egg about the same as a leggie...'cept it had a slight light brown hue. That was a collosal waste of my money.
Live and learn.

(No offense to anyone and their birds or Valentine....this is just my opinion of the birds that I had)

Ditto.. Nuff said!

Hey Geebs,

You think that I should have gotten one of the blue Marans. I can probably still get one. I just thought it had been a lot of trouble getting the Black Copper and that it might be even more trouble finding a Blue cockerel/roo. Is it common to breed the Black with the Blue? What do you mean passive-aggressive? Susan

It was a funny susan (passive aggressive smilies)

If you like the blue birds and you have a chance to get some nice dark layers that are blue... you can use a black rooster on them.. or a blue... both work.. You will get different colors when you breed them. That is the fun part....

Yep..yep....gotta get a blue!

IMHO I think everyone should have Blue Coppers running around...they are kinda like Pringles...can't have just one.

Playing catch up here...

When a rooster deposits his sperm in the hen, it goes on top of whatever is in there already. All I can think ofis its like a "well". The hen draws off the sperm from the top of the "well", not the bottom. So, if you put your rooster in with hens with sperm already in their "well", his sperm will be deposited on top. The hen, in theory, then should draw off the top layer of sperm to fertilize the eggs.

In reality, I would wait at least a couple of weeks before you start collecting the eggs for hatching. By then, there should be a good deposit of sperm on the top of her "well" from the new rooster.

(interesting little sidenote) There is actually several places that the hen stores sperm and she can store different sperm from different suitors and studies have been done and show that she can actually "choose" who the offspring are from and reject others....
