Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Dark eggs, Marans....
I have a few in the bator, now that one started laying, it looks like I'm gonna have a very staggered hatch.
I know it will be a mess in 3 weeks! and another one, and another, and just ONE more.....

The M word is very scary, ESPECIALLY to a very independent, self sufficient woman. I would give it a little time to sink in.
Then talk to her about it. Don't walk away from this one, especially if you want her. JMO

Thanks Raven....
Marans, people, Marans...Speaking of which, mine stayed out in the rain all day yesterday. I hope they don't get sick....

The eggs I had for breakfast this morning were great, but the shells sure were thin...

The rib steak was "to die for".... If you don't believe me, just ask the cow that provided it!

Thanks, Debbi! I couldn't be more thrilled with them. And, yes, I do know the Silkie is supposed to have middle toe feathering AND 5 toes. Coolest thing!!

(However, the middle-toe feathering was apparently contagious in the incubator because both of the Cuckoos have just the barest hint of fuzz on their middle toe and at least 1 of the BCMs.

Thankfully, none of the Ameraucanas caught it.

My Marans stayed out in the rain all day yesterday because Lil' Bill was careless about where he was scratching and pecking and scratched the door stop out of place. With the wind we had I probably needn't tell you that the door was blown closed and I didn't bother to go out and open it back up to let them back in their coop until I did chores last night. They were all soaked...I mean soaked. They didn't care or they would have got under one of their many dry shelters to go when they are out in the grass. What's funny is when I opened the door to let them back in and fill their feed up, they ignored me and went right back outside into their coop run...in the rain.

Mine all stay out in the rain too. Hasn't killed any yet, although they do look so pitiful soaked to the skin. They all have access to cover and the coop is always open in the day for the run birds. But, nothing is more pitiful than a soaked Silkie!

Now those little idiots, I do worry about getting wet.

Hmmm I have tried durian fruit. I think I'm allergic to it though. It smells terrible (think.. something died!!) but doesn't actually taste half bad. I did it on a dare! If the trees could survive the winter temps here I would plant one on the property close to the nieghbor's side and let the fruits rot on the ground lol. Man they reek.

Looking forward to seeing baby birchen pics!!!

Getting ready to lock up my birchens in thier breeding coop. I'm so excited. I haven't seen an egg from the black birchen girl yet but have seen them from the blue birchen girl. Hope the black one starts laying soon. I think I am gonna go ahead and add my pure black marans female to the birchen pen as well because she has really nice feathered shanks and lays a dark egg. I have a black marans feathered shanked male I can try over that mossy (non feathered shanked) black birchen girl. I wonder which way would work out better?

It has been raining alot lately everything is really gross in the runs!!! I don't know how the people in really rainy areas manage thiers? I really need to redesign ours for better drainage..it is BAD!
