They do look like they came from the same place. And the kicker is someone will say from Bev or Wade, and you spend money after they have been so messed up, and this is what you get!
As far as egg color, they are just ok, but if you want to perfect the breed, cull and try again. JMO
Hey all, while we are talking about the Marans Comb why not include the talk to include other Comb faults. Twisted , loped, thumbprint, and overall shape of comb. Doesn't have to be a DQ either.
Don, I have one cockerel, his comb is OK, but it's really fat on the bottom, like a reverse thumbprint.
Even on both sides. I am at work, don't have pics, and he is young, waiting to fill out.
Do you see any cause for alarm so far?
Quote:
These are what the last Marans I hatched looked like. I did a small test hatch with the intent to cut down on the white chick down, well they had mostly brown markings when the started feathering. This male was three year old and never used before. They were sold to the Vietnamese for eating, so no one was able to breed any of them. The worst part was I hatched over 400 of these before I spotted the fault. Never breed those brown birds with the heavy feather shafting.
And this is what all responsible breeders SHOULD do. EAT them.
Many of the money makers will sell them as Marans, and this is what we wind up with.
And after you waste a year of feed, and care, you are further behind than when you started.
