Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I agree with Pink, but would like to offer a bit more detail. The hens are exhibiting shafting (where the shaft of the feather is lighter). This is a defect. Their combs all appear to be flopped over - some say this is due to Penedesenca (they say "Penne" for short) blood in the birds. Their lobes appear to be white - this would be a disqualification. The one to the far right - appears her eyes are too dark, but could be the picture. I do not see any feathering on the shanks of the females - this is a disqualification. Cock bird - appears he has white in his tail (this is something most of us have bred out by now). His shank feathering is far too sparse. Too many points on his comb (but that is minor), and appears to have the white underfeathering in his hackles, which would go along with the white in his tail. So.....these birds should most definitely not be used for breeding. Sorry to be so blunt!

I forgot to mention that this picture was taken a while back when they were recovering from a molt. Their lobes arent white, it must be the pic. The one on the far right does have dark eyes and the pic makes them look darker. The two females in the front have some shank feathering with the one on the front far right having the most.

I guess if I cant get the kinks worked out of this quad I will never have good birds, I cant afford the price the good birds go for. Would anyone be interested in sending me a complimentary dozen of eggs from their good quality birds lol. Im very disappointed now, I knew they had flaws but I didnt realize they had that many.

I am pretty new to BYC, but I haven't seen those names in this thread recently. Would be interesting to see the chicks.
Maybe they have it all figured out....

Here is the link to Charms birds on her site http://indainoaksfancyfeathers.webs.com/apps/photos/

And
here are images of Julie's birds https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=592055

Would
love to hear what others think of both of these and then of our sons chicks. Like I said will get him to help Rangel chicks and take some pictures of them to share.

Just some straight talk. The second link has Penne cross fowl pictured. Look at the carnation comb females and the white in tail, Very little shank feathering, We have spent three days going over faults like these.

We need to ask for pictures and study them to know what we are about to buy. Most of these sellers do not have a clue. Sorry

Don,

Thank you! Will split those from his grow out pen and use the pullets in my eatting egg flock. They won't go into his breeding pen for sure though.

Ok, anyone have hatching eggs available? Just bought him a Dickey cabinet bator and will pick it up later this week. So looking for good stock BCM eggs again.

EVERYONE says they have Wade Jean or Bev Davis lines. If everyone that says they had them were talking about getting them directly from any of those folks, those breeders would have to raise millions of birds. Even if they are from those sources, it only takes two years max to totally ruin any line.

The truth is: 90% of all Marans breeders really don't know what they have in their birds. Until you do, you will be fighting all this stuff.

The items I mentioned would have nothing to do with molting, sorry. You state: "I guess if I cant get the kinks worked out of this quad I will never have good birds, I cant afford the price the good birds go for." Think on this a moment - you can't get great birds from inferior stock. You just can't. Sorry. I'm sorry if I've offended or hurt your feelings...that was not my intention. I DO hope you are able to find something that you can work with - keep looking, and keep researching...the more you know, the more quickly you'll be able to pick out a good prospect from a sales pen!

IMHO, those look like they have Wellie in them. I have seen some male and females with some splotchin on the breast but it was more defined and less smeared. Again, thats a bummer about your birds and folks are selling them as such.

This is one of the major reasons I like to go a look at the parent birds if possible and why I dont like ordering eggs. Its just seems like a gamble. But sometimes we have no choice but to take that gamble. Many folks on BYC are very forth coming, and should be, about sellers and there birds. I think thats what truely adds value to this site!
