I'm with you, there. I've said it many, many times & I'll say it again. You MUST do your research. KNOW what to look for and be able to recognize flaws. Know what you're willing to work with, and what you're unwilling to work with. Knowledge = power.

I'm still a relative newbie and I did pay dearly for my eggs. But they were sold to me honestly, as "not show quality". I was buying egg colour. I have since educated myself A LOT in Marans. Found out my birds aren't THAT bad. Far from perfect but not the end of the world either. Also managed to get some eggs from folks that do know what they are doing with Marans AND have good egg colour. It's a start. It's a slow process. But I'm happy. Y'all can kick the crap outta me any day!!!I'm gonna keep coming back.

It is a bummer! What’s worst are the unscrupulous individuals that are "hocking" this birds to good people! ! Obviously, each individual should do their research, etc....but this is just one of the problems affecting our country today! The issue is....there are too many "used car salesmen" trying to make a buck the fast, easy and sleazy way. Thus we need to CULL, CULL, CULL those people!!

Hi Stoopid! (Somehow it just doesn't feel right saying that!)

Anyway, that is a beautiful boy you have there, love those legs

It'll be interesting to see how he develops.......

Paulo, I totally get what you're saying. It's a shame, to be sure. But - look forward, and be happy with what you're learning...then ZINGO! YOU will be the one with superior stock!

Also, nothing wrong with some pretty, dark eggs in your egg basket! Goodness, if you take a poll of just those participating on this thread, and there are thousands of Marans breeders by now, obviosly only a handful on BYC, I bet you'll find that the majority of us all started with crappy stock, and paid through the nose for eggs that hatched out inferior specimens. You take a big sigh....and move on, as you are doing! Keep up the good work!!!

I want you know I've hatched out of what I thought would be good birds all the faults we've been talking about plus other ones....Marans have issues because they are "rare designer birds" plenty of backyard poultry owners who can't have a rooster want dark eggs they quickly buy any of mine who don't make the grade for their egg baskets and I'm happy to get some feed money because these birds love to eat

All the cull roosters taste just like home grown chicken very tasty.

I think you are miles ahead learning now what you need to have for good birds it really costs more to have sub-standard birds they eat the same feed that good birds do.....

I've learned much from everyone on this board and now own a few birds that are good enough for me to play with.....just keep on learning maybe if you haven't raised SOP poultry you should buy some birds from a master breeder raise them up and wow you can see the difference in the quality......all the while you can keep trying to find some good Marans but your eyes need to learn what to look for in any bird and buying a SOP and reading it until you know the cuts will help you in the long run. Very few people make money with SOP birds and when they do they've been doing it for quite some time...I can so understand breeders having a hard time sharing their stock with "newbies" just like Walt said it doesn't take long to ruin good stock and then it has their name attached to it.

I was unhappy with many of my hatches and thought I would never get a start but I haven't thrown in the towel yet and I'm having lots of fun watching my own babies grow up and they are laying those dark eggs......of course they are not perfect but I enjoy this hobby and I am having a blast meeting others who are trying right along with me.
