x 2.... I just googled penedesenca chickens IMAGES the other day and what an Eye Opening experience that was....

What dodo even thought that throwing in a little penedesenca blood was a good thing ? ?

Funky Combs, White Ear Lobes, etc. . . SERIOUSLY, What were these folks thinking ? ?

I'll tell you exactley what they were thinking..."Darker Eggs"

Obviously, that didn't work. We have lighter and pointier eggs in the Marans now too. Marans eggs are supposed to be very much rounder in shape.

If you think New York is bad, try Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(But we do have the benefit of a handful of keeners AND some very helpful APA judges that encourage our addiction - and we're used to driving long distances to satisfy our cravings. I know there is another "clinic" being planned this winter. New York isn't THAT far from Ontario so I'll let you know details just in case!

Delmarva And Sussex County are closer than any show in NY. I am on Long Island.
And if you have ever driven thru NYC to get anywhere.... You'd understand.

Not sure what you are asking here?? I don't discount anyone here, UNLESS they have an obvious DQ that I know isn't going anywhere or changing with age. White feathers, at least here, come and go.

If you get a judge familiar with the Marans, would the white leg feathers be an issue?
If he knew they aren't permanent?

Like BarnGoddess said, all a judge can do is to judge that particular bird, on that particular day. It is what it is to him/her on the day of judging. You could say the same thing with a molting bird, "well, he usually has beautiful feathers!" Wonder how far you'd get with that??

In case you do go to the shows, even with a great bird in great condition, I personally, would take a stack of printed out SOP copies for the judges and any other interested people to take and read.

Here is the real misconception.... So many folks think that GOOD birds have to cost a lot. In fact, some of the most expensive eggs are from the folks selling the worse birds! LOL

Most of us on here will sell you eggs and not at a jacked up price either. If you ask us, we should be able to tell you what is wrong with our flocks and what we are working on too! As you have read recently, most of us are working on SOMETHING with the breed.

I wouldn't try to get any more eggs until you are more familiar with what the breed should look like. THIS Thread is HUGE, but the beginning is full of pictures of with some serious critiquing of birds. If you take your time and go back.... you will find examples of many folks birds and the commentaries on them. It is a GREAT way to figure out who has what you want.

I've learned EVERYTHING I know about bcm on this thread. I know it will take a LONG time to read through it, but you won't regret it.
You want to find someone who is in this for the long haul, not a here today gone tomorrow ( with your money) egg seller. If someone was posting two years ago on this thread and is still actively breeding marans - - - then that is a good thing. OBTW, there is an OLD marans thread that was shut down before this one was created. That was before me! LOL If you read their posts and they say egg color is more important than the SOP, then you know where their head is at.

Most folks on here are not out to gouge you. Once you locate someone you want to get eggs from - - contact them. You will be surprised at how reasonable the price will be. MOST folks here really care about the breed, not about making a profit.

I can attest to this. I have encountered the most generous folks in the chicken world.

Now, if only I could convince Don to let me apprentice with him - I would be all set.

This is what we have been documenting recently... We can give you names of folks with better stock, but really good stock is very hard to find.

Pink had some of the best stuff on this thread until she introduced some new blood that was supposedly direct from "Bev Davis"
hide.gif

I only mention the name BECAUSE even going straight to the source and paying $ $ $ will not guarantee that strange things don't occur.

I think all of us are trying our best to get what we have right. A lot of us aren't interested in putting less than "Good" out there.

Wynette has some marans, Geebs has some marans, Ruth has some marans with really dark eggs, marsquisella has been doing this a while too, and there are the winners from the show in Newnan, Ga (rockyspringsfarm is one of them ) this past Feb that you could contact, etc. . . Some having waiting lists, some only sell live birds, some only have a few hens, etc.

My advice to all is go back and read through this thread. Folks will spend WEEKS reading things on the web but won't spend time going through this thread. This thread offers examples of a person's birds plus insights to their philosphy of breeding. . . .

It is ALWAYS a buyer beware market and this is the place to LEARN before you buy

SPEAKING of GEEBS, where is she hanging out at lately? I haven't seen any low riders in a while! Did they go out of style ? ?

A proper APA judge is supposed to make himself familiar with the breeds he will be judging. I believe they are all aware that the Black Copper Marans have just been accepted to the SOP and do try to educate themselves prior to judging although mistakes do happen at this point.

It would not hurt to have a Marans Standard printed that could be available to a judge that is unfamiliar (most judges at the moment) with Marans. Other folks do this just after a breed is accepted or before it is accepted into the SOP. Judges are supposed to read the description that is always printed in the APA newsletter after recognition, but some don't or forget. It is better to get it into the judges hands before the judging and done in a way that is non threatening. "I know that because the Marans has just been accepted, you may not have the description with you blah, blah, blah"

I wasn't gone Goddess, I only post when I think I might have something of interest. I usually skim through the threads I subscribe to. I'm keeping my eye on you...eh!
