Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey, I'm just starting out with Marans and I have a few questions. First, how do Americans, in general, pronounce Marans? Is it maaRON as your high school french teacher might point out, or MAARAANZ as we might sound it out as Americans?

My first BCM's are approaching adulthood, and I want to say their personality is unlike any other chickens I own. So so still and quiet. Even the cockerel's crows are quiet. They really do have a different personality. Wow, I picked up one rooster and slaughtered him poor guy and he didn't fight, didn't peep, just said sort of hey, alright, I'll be dinner--Whatever! Masterful breeding of personality if what you want is calm stoicism. Never try to jump the fence...don't cause trouble with the other hens...

Anyways, when are they going to lay? I've been getting an egg a day for over a month from the Leghorns I raised with them! 25.5 weeks, on the edge of my seat. I can't stand it another minute.

Renee
Hi!

Give them just a little more time.......they will lay. They are just taking their sweet time like they like to do.

I would like to know this too.... I say it the southern way WRONG I am sure.... I say it like you would say Mare like a horse.... I am sure it is said like CataMARAN I know you don't pronounce the s.

The french say Mah-waa with a nice rich nasal-ly sound and I suppose that here in the U.S we hear it all sorts of different ways....like Mare-annz or Marr-annz or Morons (which I hear it called more often than not) or Mah-ranz.. I say Mah-ranz....with the exception of the days that Morons is more appropriate.

, I know what you mean about everything taking longer to load and read, maybe the bugs are still being worked out. Haven't tried to post pictures yet, work has been super busy that there isn't any extra time

Hi Renee, I pronounce it as your French teacher would've, mahRahn. Even though it is always spelled with an S at the end, the S should be silent when spoken. At 25.5 weeks, you should be getting some eggs soon, although depending on your weather it may take longer. Is it cold where you are??

Wow, quite different from down here! It's almost 55* already, very windy, and thunderstorms coming in this afternoon, although they look to be coming now!

I know that Nifty and company are very busy and I know they are sorting out the bugs....I just need to learn more patience I think. I have posted a few photos and it is not that bad at all, I do prefer uploading them vs getting them from my albums on my profile. I do like the make your photos public function though.
