Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Pink,
Il Stoopido is a girl. Now gee, that's a surprise.

I wish you luck in the workforce, it stinks.

Randy,
Those smart phones aren't too smart.
The first day my friend used it, she wanted Jeanett Russo's e-mail
Her phone wrote "do you have russias email?"
She got mad because I didn't know what she was talking about.

Dh just dropped off 2 cockerels to "live at the farm".
The guy actually said he wanted more, if I could throw in a few hens, that would be great.

I got rid of Rudy, my little blue copper boy with the rudimentary toes. He had feathers coming in on the 2nd toe with no exposure to the dew, and he turned out to be a very large butthead.
I swore if he bit me one more time, I would learn how to twist their necks without making the bloody mess like I did last week. Yuck.

Hello Everyone!

Been missing the Marans thread but have been busy buttoning up some loose ends getting ready to close our construction and remodeling business of 30+ years due to the economy and getting ready to re-enter the work force and work for the man. I am going to go back to work doing Nursing Administration for my former employer of almost 20 years. Oh how I can't wait for the bustle of and headache..but hey a job is a job. We think that DH is going to go do an apprenticeship at the local electrician hall...keep your fingers crossed.

Anyway.....enough of that....let's talk Marans. I sold my boy G2 the other day to a lovely young gal that is going to keep him with her flock of Barred Rocks. He is sorely missed already as he was a very sweet boy, but I know he is being well cared for and having the time of his life with his new girls, plus he doesn't have Bill Sr, knocking him around anymore so that makes me feel tons better. No matter what I did, I couldn't keep those 2 away from each other and from playing mirror mirror through the fence. Geesh they would get soooooo beat up through the fence....dummies! You would think that after living next door to each other for almost a year they would get over it already....NOT!!!!

Lil' Bill is doing great and so are all the ladies that are in with him. I continue to fill the 'bator with every available acceptable egg from his coop as I am trying to keep up with the demand for chicks.

Bill Sr. is now the king of the layer flock and loving life as a free ranger 24/7.

My Splash Copper boy is looking great at 4+ mos. old and so is the blue copper pullet that hatched from the same clutch, though she is not showing any signs of copper, but I surely do love her type and personality.

I lost the one and only Silver Birchen pullet that was actually showing silver and not yellow or gold. :hit  I don't know what happened....they were out free ranging in the commons area one day and when I came home she was laying outside the coop door dead. No injuries that I could see anywhere on her. I am thinking heart attack possible induced by the hawks that have been visiting frequently of late.  Now I only have 2 females, one that shows gold and the other is all black. I am very happy with the male that I kept that is showing silver and has fabulously feathered shanks and he is a chunk monster. He is a little skiddish so I have been working with him on that and he is doing pretty good.

Oh and STOO!!!!!!! I am such a goob....all this time I thought my little chickadee, your namesake was a male...but boy o boy was I ever wrong, LOL! She is turning into a very lovely and very large pullet.

that realy stinks kim I've been in construction since 1979 doing residential remodeling in the economy is ter
it's hard to compete with illegal aliens would pick up trucks bidding a job solo. it was there for on the economy was good for good luck in your new work adventure

Thought I would share a few updated pictures of my Marans chicks that are now 3.5 months old- I have 2 splash pullets, 1 Blue Copper cockeral and 3 blue cockerals. Trying to decide if I should continue raising them and do some test mating or if they have to many other issues going on that I shouldn't waste my time, space and food. Opinions would be most welcome- you won't hurt my feelings!

He wasn't the most cooperative for pictures!

Here is the blue one with the most funky comb. I have 2 more blue cockerals but have to finish croping the pictures before I post them. I also took some pictures of my Blue cuckoo Marans too.

Thanks for the well wishes friends, I appreciate it! Everything happens for a reason you know.
(Randy~ You are right.....we cannot compete with multiple families in a household undercutting the going rates, a whole nutha' topic.) Sorry all off topic for a moment....back on now. :)

Hens~ That first cockerel has nice comb and he has good blue color, however, his hackle is a bit light for my taste, so I personally would not use him for breeding, though I am very curious as to what he may produce.

The second boy should go to the freezer and where's the photos of the girlies?????

There is a way to cull without making a mess. PM me if you like. No mess...and quick.

i was ready to cull 6 yesterday they are 1 year old roos .had the ax out and a log to do it on but my sister said wait. it didnt take much convincing. lol. the outher post i just dod was addresed to u also. i forgot to hit quote button .. i hate not haveing internet on my home computer. all i have is a semi smart phone amd my spelling is awful lol

I hate posting on forums on my 'smart' phone. I get the worst typos due to my touch keyboard and my phone being idiotic plus I am so used to texting when I am on the phone and using abbreviations and text lingo then I automatically do it and no one knows what I am talking about on the forums LOL!! Its good when the internet goes out on the home puters and I can use my phone. Our home internet is so crappy always going off and on because our house is more than 300 ft from the street so even though they replaced all the wiring etc we still have horrible service with our cable.

Look what my lil pullet laid this morning! It is her 5th egg. Each one has been a little different but all have some sort of spots. The base color is a 4 on the egg chart (flash may have lightened it up).
Are those dark spots her sprayers trying to work? Might her eggs be the color of the spots one day? Or will she probably always lay a spotted egg? Cuz thats cool too.

Another question....
Hold on while I bust out some new words I learned.

I am trying to figure out the genotype of my marans.
Black copper and blue copper marans are E^R/E^R at the e locus... correct?
And a solid blue (a true solid blue) is E/E?
