Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Congrats on the egg!
You are speaking an unknown language on the genotype but hey sounds good lol
I am sure someone will come along and let you know the answer!

Look what my lil pullet laid this morning! It is her 5th egg. Each one has been a little different but all have some sort of spots. The base color is a 4 on the egg chart (flash may have lightened it up).
Are those dark spots her sprayers trying to work? Might her eggs be the color of the spots one day? Or will she probably always lay a spotted egg? Cuz thats cool too.

Another question....
Hold on while I bust out some new words I learned.

I am trying to figure out the genotype of my marans.
Black copper and blue copper marans are E^R/E^R at the e locus... correct?
And a solid blue (a true solid blue) is E/E?

Can't answer your questions, but will admire your egg. Love the spots! Any chance you have her first 4 to line up and see if there is progressive spotting, color change?

Christie, check out this page for the answer to your gene question. http://maransofamericaclub.com/blackcoppergenetics.php .

My girl laid a spotty egg like that her third egg. The colour evened out after that and is now quite solid.

Gee CR, you're been playing with the genetics calculator !

@pink, can the black coppers be used in black sexlink crosses effectively? Is the R in the lingo above a separate gene than the E^?
Or CR you may know the answer too now!

Actually I have been doing a lot of research for another project that I want to do with Ameraucanas and then realized..."hey I think I need to know what my marans are too!" My kooky brain just can't rest till I understand. lol
