Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki - it must be all the hormones running around!!
I'm getting some tiny ones, too, from my 4mth olds, but not THAT tiny and cute!!

Beautiful chicks everyone!!

Lisa - I've never had a copper spot, but the only 3 splash babies i've had looked like #2 - congrats!

Boy, this place has just absolutely died, hasn't it?

I'm seeing a lot of yellow feet on my newly hatched Black Copper Marans. Their legs and toes should be black---will this color change as they mature? I can't figure it out, all my adults have black legs/feet. There are some that are part gray, part yellow.

It could change you need to keep an eye on them. Yellow legs are recessive so you chicks have gotten 2 copies for it to show. Your breeding birds each carry a copy for it to express in the chicks. It can just be from the yolk. I have only hatched one with yellow legs... he is going to be dinner very soon since it never changed.

Marcy~ We need photos to help you out with the color of the feet. But....sometimes the feet are darker and the toes are a lighter fleshy tone. Some will darken as they get older....but photos will help alot.

:)

Chickenlisa~ Your babies are too cute! That first chick photo'd should be watched as the spots on the chick are not normal for Copper or Birchen Marans. The chick with the copper spot may or may not get copper when older. I always get atleast one little chick from my hatches that shows a copper spot, be it on the top of the head or the back of the head. The last one that I grew out with a spot of copper still only has that one spot of copper and she is over 5 months old. :)

MEL~ I'm having serious phone issues as you are already aware...not ignoring you. No olive eggers yet, but the oober dark Marans egg you gave me has hatched and the chick is doing great and looks to be a Black Copper. :)
5 of the Olive eggs went into lockdown and the rest were clear. Can you collect more Olive eggs for me? Pretty please?!?!?!? I will try calling you later today. Thanks again for the eggs and hoping something happens with the 5 OE's in there.
This hatch is being stupid slow compared to the last hatch of fridge babies that popped out a day early. Silly chicks!

OK, I will try to take some--not sure when, I am swamped right now, just bought a huge chicken pen condo setup from a guy who used to show chickens but got out of the hobby--need to do a lot of work to get it operational, including digging a trench to run water there in the most awful rocky and clay soil you can imagine. But really, some of these chicks have feet and legs that are solid yellow.
