Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Only the "pros" can vent sex and it is not something generaly done by non Hatchery people.

I am fairly sure any chicken breed can be vent sexed for Gender. From what I have read, it is an art form and someone has to teach you. Some are better at it than others too.

Bye,

Ron

I have some marans. The roo attacks me and i am not sure if that is usuall. I will be walking more than 20 feet away from him and he comes after me.

I have a BCM that's a jerk. Gotten worse lately (he's officially a "cock" this weekend). He's being culled on Tuesday!!!!

I have a Blue Copper that is absolutely, hands down, the NICEST boy I've EVER had. Brother to the jerk. So in my opinion, it totally depends on the bird. They either are or they aren't.

And I read that someone else was hatching out some eggs from Ms. Wynette right now...wonder how those are going?

Don't think I saw this one answered ... I believe Stoopid may be hatching or very close to hatching Wynette eggs right now ... Fingers AND toes crossed that Stoo reports in with good news soon!!

(I think she may be showing again this weekend. She's a busy girl these days!)

Maybe you need a better brand. The stuff I buy is oyster shell--says Pacific Oyster shell right on the bag, and it looks like crushed up oyster shell.
Hi all, thought I'd pop in, in between the storms.

Arielle, Are you feeding "Oyster Shell" to your girls?? I used to get calcium warts on quite a few of my eggs till I quit feeding it! Haven't had any since. I also have no problem with soft shelled eggs. With their feed, grass, bugs, and treats, I believe they get all the calcium and Vit. D they need. I'd still like to know why they call it "Oyster Shell"?? It is basically gypsum, aka, drywall!

The black and white one is a Barred Plymouth Rock (rooster). The yellow ones are Buff Orpington. The red ones look like a mixed red production bird, because they have some white on the wings. The Buff Orpington in the last picture is also a rooster.

Well I am glad I picked a roo... since he was free LOL. I am getting pretty good at this

I don't remember what pen he hatched from. He may have come from the pen with Pink's boy that looks like Gnarls or he came from the pen that has one of Pink's pullets with Erik my avatar. Not sure. I have LOTS of chicks that are marked we can keep an eye on, maybe not roos this year though.

ENJOY HIM! I would like to see him grow up too!

Ok final count from the broodies... the Marans had 9 eggs, 7 hatched, one was dead this morning and one pipped and didn't make it out. Ended up with 4 Blue Coppers and 2 Black coppers. The Blue Rock hatched 6 too, she had 7 eggs. 5 blue and 1 black.... I think I am right on the colors. Lots more blues than blacks. The Rock seems to be a better mommy, I had to put a lost chick back with the Marans today. He was really crying for mama too. I will keep an eye on her. With my hatch and theirs, 77 chicks. I got 2 lavender Ameraucanas

they are the fluffiest chicks I have ever hatched!

Just a quick question for those that are in the midwest. I was wondering what the interest might be for the possibility of a Marans meet in Lincoln, NE? We're working on developing the show for Nov and selecting meets and etc for it, so thought I would ask to see if it would be worth it to pursue it. I know for sure I will be there, since I'm doing all the paperwork for it

That's a neat idea, not sure we would have anything to show and we aren't NPIP either at this time.
