Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It is funny. I replied to a request from someone wanting laying hens to replace a couple that were killed by a dog. I told my Wife that I might be selling the two Barred Rocks and she said they were too pretty to sell. I smiled and said I guess they get to stay.

With chicken Math:

Males don't count because they become dinner 45-13= 32
Each Breed counts as one so by that method I only have 9 chickens!

My plan is to have 15 for my layer flock and breed Cream Legbars and EO Marraduna Basque. Now I just have to stop hatching chicks and get rid of some of them.

Hmmm, I love the way you think!

Oh yeh, and Silkies don't even count as chickens. They are just alien creatures here for my entertainment!

Well, 3 new Silkies in the world, with 3 more pips. NO SGs!

Today is day 22, so will give them one more day; never had any of these hatch after day 23. I sure can tell who the daddy of these chicks is. Big Boo, the dark blue that passed away in that freak conk on the head. Two are either black or really dark blue, and one is a lighter blue. He was a nice roo, so I am glad to have some babies from him.

Congratulations on the Silkies! Sounds like you are pleased with those results.

That is a bummer about the SGs.

Looks like I'm a little slow picking up on this chicken math thing... The way I'm reading it is since I bought 4 chicks over the weekend of a breed I already had, they don't count towards my total, right? And because I'll received 15 chicks of a breed I don't already have and they are of the same breed, then they really only total one?

Yea! now if the chickens could only understand this and stop eating so much...

That is a nice looking egg! I hope she keeps it up for you.
Sharing some egg colour with y'all today. Pullet eggs. 25 weeks old. BCM on top, left. She's been working on her's for about 10 days now. First egg from my Blue Ameraucana below it. Some of my hens' eggs on the right (Blue Copper Marans and Red Star) to compare. I truly couldn't be more thrilled!

Maran question...

I picked up a couple of week old marans last week. One black copper and one wheaten. I know NOTHING about marans, specifically, but these two are SOO different. The wheaten (Sugar) has the smoothest feathers, most of her wing feathers and is MUCH larger than the black copper (Hurra).
Hurra's 'shoulder' feathers seem to be sort of a mess. She just looks 'rumpled'. She's also the quietest of the bunch (6 others of other breeds). Is this super docile nature typical of the breed? Could she be bantam?? Should I do something about her feathers??? I keep looking to see if she's got mites or something...
Any opinions??
Thanks,
Debbie
