I use a toothbrush and warm water in a big cup or bowl. I submerge the chick up to its head let it soak and then start brushing with the toothbrush. It may take awhile. I have also discovered it will get eaten off by the other chicks too. But I like to make sure they can FLUFF some to keep warm. I usually put them back in the hatcher till they dry off.

About my sick birds --just got off the phone with a woman who lost a bunchof chicks due to paraylisis, took the bocies to New Bolton Center and the crops were impacted with bedding.
THe vets said with the bedding filling the crop they cannot feed properly and the reaulting malaborption resulted in this symptom of paralysis.
Can I assist in clearing the crop other than giving some grit? THe woman said those with very hard crops were doomed.
ANy suggestions?

I lost a pullet to impacted crop and did a lot of reading on it.... there is surgery, but that is more than I wanted to think about. I most logical and easiest thing I read was COKE flat soda. The acids will dissolve the stuff in the crop. I don't think grit is good for chicks so just be careful with that. It works to clean car batteries, and clear clogs in your drains why would it not work to clear a crop? Just make sure it is flat no carbonation.
BTW it will dissolve and egg shell....

That's it. Does anyone know of a real BCM breeder here in South Eastern Ohio? If so please let me know, even if their a breeding trio, Iv'e got to have pure bred
I got another goofy question? If I was to have a lets say 9/10ths of a maran and 9/10ths, would I be able to bred till their pure?

Have you tried warm water and dawn dish soap- it's used to clean wildlife after oil spills and might help get the gunk off.DesertMarcy, I know nothing... having said that. Your birds look nice to me! and to have that many to choose from, cool!
So, my destined for 'cull' chick made it through the night. Chirping ALL the way, I MUST move the incubator out of my bedroom immediately!. I popped her in a brooder with a newly hatched Orp for company. She IS eating! and there is a Marans hatching right now. zipped all the way... been that way since 5 this morning.... This one looks dark.
Debbi, I did not know there was a white variety of Marans, I kind of thought my neighbor made it up. The depth of my ignorance is truly inconceivable. Perhaps THIS is why he doesn't want me to breed? (not my ignorance, but because they're white?) Anyway, here he/she is, I wish I could say she's wet, but it's that glue sticky stuff that is like cement. Poor thing.

can you turn the chick so the head is facing down towards the floor and work the crop so it spits it out?

not sure where or who would be good to get some Marans from. Good Luck hopefully someone will have some ideas for you.
I used Dawn and 95* running water. Let it soak and washed, washed, washed.
