Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just wanted to introduce myself! I just got 5 Cuckoo Marans a little over a week ago, along with SS, EE's and SSH :) but the marans took the cake for being hardy little birds... I got 23 chicks and all of the marans were wide eyed and bushy tailed! so to speak....they were the only ones I let my son handle the 1st few days because the SSh were small and I had a few weak ones...better now, and some of the EE's had pasty butt...better now...The SS were also quite perky but I still had a few that were tired...not the marans haha they are also super sweet...but then all chicks that I have bought form purely poultry are exceptionally tame :)
here are a few picts I took last week

Hi and Welcome to the Marans thread! Very sweet photo of the chick in your hand! Glad they are all feeling better and perked up for you.

Debbi~ How are those broodies and babies doing?
Morning all!

Kim, The chickies and moms and dad are doing great! I had two more chicks hatch last night in the bator. The Splash girls was left in the nest box, by order of her room mates, to hatch the rest of the eggs as they took care of the babies on the ground. I couldn't stand it any longer, and pulled the eggs out from under her and put them in the bator. Getting ready to take the two that hatched last night out to the pen. SIXTEEN BABIES!!! With more possibly coming later in the week.

They are amazing to watch outside! All I have to do is show some of the new ones where the water is, and let them drink, and they are on their own! They all come running to the gate now when they see me coming with the feed bucket, so different from the ones in the brooder who run the other way when the big hand comes in!

I pulled the eggs out of the Partridge pen too, and those are the two chicks that hatched, sorry mamas. I am selling off my Partridge flock, and wanted the girls to get a break before they are sold. I think I love this broody stuff!!

Debbi~ Sounds like they are doing great and yes broodies are fun. I love the babies with Mamma's, they are totally different with Mamma's then they are when raised by us in a brooder.
I have 3 little Splash BLR Wy babies right now that think that a 6 week old suppose to be Olive egger pullet is their Mamma. She is a sweetie pie and doesn't care. Let's them snuggle right up under her and then she lowers herself and sits on them, what's funny is they try to pop up out from under her tiny little wings like they would on a big Mamma. I am going to keep her in hopes that she indeed will be a good mother, besides she is a Splash and we all know how much I love those Splash birds. Too bad she won't be laying an Olive egg.

Boy, the difference is indeed like night and day! I love how this roo takes care of them all too. He calls them over for treats, and he will not go into the coop at night until all babies are inside! Everyone takes care of everyone, so that makes it just that much easier for all! The moms are all Pit Bulls when someone strange, like a dog or cat, comes up to the fence! They literally throw themselves at the fence and get all puffed up and vocal. I need to take some pics today of the Partridge flock, hope to get some good chick pics too!

Love Daddy roosters! They are almost more fun to watch then Mamma's.
Bill Sr, is a good Daddy....heck, Bill will raise anything. I don't think he knows he is a chicken. He does love babies though. If he was living up here on chicken hill closer to the grow out pen (instead of freeranging with the goaties and 3 of his grandsons) he would spend his time by the youngin's clucking to them and telling them what to do even though he is on the outside of the fence.
Haven't had any babies with Lil' Bill yet as Darryl can't make up her mind if she is going to sit or not. If she goes all serious on me, she will be getting eggs and I will leave her in with her flock this time to see how LB will do with babies. Hope he got his dads attitude with chicks.

That's how Clyde is, he is the inhouse babysitter! He takes care of chicklets out here, showing them treats and fending off some of the bully girls. He now sits by the Silkie gate and calls over their babies, none of which makes "Bossy" the roo very happy! Clyde met me at the gate and followed me to the pen this morning, when he heard the chicks I was bringing outside! He talked to me the whole way to the Silkie pen. Put the 2 babies in the nest box, and waited for "Splish", the Splash gal to find new babies. It didn't take long, and she was in there talking to them and settled down with them. Truely amazing to me...

Can't wait till I can get some MARANS chick pics posted!

Any way, here is part of the broody bunch in pen 2. Only one Blue chick survived, there were 2 others, but they got squashed. The moms were not happy with my noisy camera!
