Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Is there anyone here willing to message me and give a little advice on shipping chickens?
I'm wanting to sell now and then and have 4 or 5 Cuckoo Maran Roo's that can go now but I want
to make sure I do this right! =)

Hi,
Shipping is easy. And lots of fun. Check with USPS to see weather is too hot. Make sure your buyer can get delivery at their PO.
Buy a box for the number of birds you want to ship from http://www.Boxesforbirds.com
A one bird box is good for a pigeon or bantam. Use a 2 bird box for one adult large fowl. 1/2 grown large fowl birds the size of pigeons can go in a one bird box ( and so on...2 in a 2 bird box; 4 in a 4 bird box, etc.) . This company's boxes are not only reusable, and you can get replacement filters for the holes...they also are USPS and veterinary approved. This company makes boxes which hold up to 8 birds for a shipment. They are every helpful. Call them for advice on which size box to buy if you need too. Buyer pays box and shipping. Throw in the GroGel Plus as a freebie. Put 10 or 12 layers of newspaper on the bottom of the box.

Buy some GroGel Plus. It's great for shipping birds. Made up, it looks like green Jello. Put some on the bottom of the box in a cup. This product has all the nutrients the birds need, plus the moisture they need while traveling. Fruit is good, but some States like California are real strict about not allowing uninspected fruit across their borders. So use GroGel Plus instead. Enough for 100 birds sells in a small powder packet for 3.95 online. It expands real large when water is added.
Send the bird USPS Express Overnight. Even if they are late getting to the buyer, the GroGel Plus should last them. Get the tracking number and share it with the buyer. Lots of fun for them to track their birds in transit. Should cost about 60-70 dollars for ship one adult large fowl bird. Pack them and take to Post Office ...have them weighed and get the price. Then take home and let seller know the amount. Once they PayPal you the funds, you can ship, weather-permitting.

Hi, the Marans folk seem to be experts at the comb issues thing. Since I can't cross-post on BYC, I wonder if some of you comb police would mind looking at my Delaware (sorry not a Marans or I would have posted pics of him here) and tell me what is going on with the weird dimpled/crenated part of the comb at the beak end. I don't see this formation addressed in the SOP, so wondering if it would be considered kind of an advanced thumbprint or what. I am wondering if it would be considered a DQ on a comb and what it might be called. The post is here, post

I couldn't figure out how to cut and paste the link, so I just typed it in, hope that works.
Thanks for looking.

Can anyone post pictures of a marans male and female at 8 weeks old. I can't tell if I have a male or female. I took it to a breeder last week and she couldn't decide either. Has a female plump body, but thinker legs. Comb is a very slight pink, but has wattles about 1/3 inch already. I am not familiar with marans. Please help/

post a pic for us.

Here's a Blue Copper boy (could this be anything other than a boy?) I hatched from DMRippy's eggs. This guy has some amazing leg feathering! He is 5 weeks old in these photos.
