Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm curious, at 3 (maybe 4) weeks Rene is struting around. Can you tell gender that early, or is she/he just at the top of the "pecking order?"

I am thinking pullet.... Is she a Cuckoo Marans? I have never paid attention but I didn't think they had a dark wash down the legs like a Barred Rock....... I need to look at my chicks.......

Hi,
Yes. That second chick is carrying the e+ locus. That's wildtype or "Golden Salmon". It does appear occasionally from a Black Copper egg. Do you have a full body picture of the second chick? Loving the arrowhead on the top of his head, very e+. Need to see the chipmunk stripes on its back. Then I can tell you how much e+ the chick is carrying.
Thanks,
Karen in western PA.

Next to her BO buddy

Thanks for your help!!

Patricia -- we can't be that far away. I'm on the north shore of Lake Erie, south east of London and I'm stressing like mad about the heat and humidity here - and VERY grateful I'm close to a lake and that my birds get outside. Even better, all my enclosures have LOADS of air circulation. Birds are panting like mad but coping so far. Funny, the Ameraucanas seem to suffer more than the Marans. The Silkies really scare me because they don't seem to "pant" like the big birds. All VERY stressful ....

hugs being sent Cadeau's way.

I am just outside of Windsor... We are hot... we are humid... I am in the county and seem to be a bit breezy compared to in town...
I just havn't seen any issues with the birds... lots of shade and I swear the old barn is 10 degrees cooler than outside everyday...
Shaded and breezy.. last summer I put a shallow pan of water in the coop and they walked in it to cool off.
Pete says he saw one spashing in the horse pails we have dispersed around for the free ranging flock.

Lots of hugs to Cadeau...

I would say roo.... But I am just guessing.. Nose, spot on the head looks lighter, would like to see his stance... my "girl" I though was just a top "girl" crowed...so if it asts like a roo, it is likely a roo

Spot on the head says roo to me, from what I've learned.
But at 4 weeks my Roo's had larger combs than that so I'm tied on this one.

Here's my Cuckoo hen 4-5 weeks for comparison.

Below him you can see the comb of a roo the same age, it's much larger.

Although I think it was due to the really hot AND humid day, so early in the year - I'm already working on adding more airflow to the house AND checking the hiding spot a million times a day...

I'm hoping that adding another fan and keeping the door slanted so that sun can't shine into the house will help....there's not much else I can do.

I was thinking - I give them a "wading pool" (a horse feeding pan filled with a couple inches of water) which they love to slog around in
BUT - could that be the culprit? could the wet feathers hold in MORE heat....??....

I've always had one in with the adults, but this is the first year I gave the youngsters one - this group is 10-12wks old (they are fully feathered and some are starting their juvie molts)

I got another Cuckoo Roo today.

(And some turkins, frizzles, and araucanas) Hubby is probably most pleased.

He is still young. But he is so sweet and so very timid. He follows me everywhere and when I bend down and call for him he comes RIGHT to me!

I am in love with this little guy! I go into the coop and he comes right to me feet. Mama's baby boy for sure! I joked with my hubby and said that I
was bringing him in the house.
