Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you Slick. You rock!

Don~ Thank you and please elaborate more. Do not hold anything back.....I don't mind if you point anything out that you see. I enjoy seeing and learning from your eyes.

Also....would you like for me to try and capture better photos of them?

Kim, I see nothing to make the blue male not useable. #2 female is the much better female Marans wise. Will elaborate if you would like.
Cool! He has a very nice wide open tail. If he would stand still for longer than 2 seconds I could get a photo of his backside, but he is a little freaky because I did not handle him as I should have, so when I go around his pen he gets very anxious and paces. Now the wait to see if he will get any copper.

Also have a very young Black Copper male (2.5 months old) that is looking very promising. Will try to get photos of him as well. He has wonderfully feathered shanks and toes.

Marcy~

#3 needs more time as Donna previously stated. I don't care for #2 and can't put my finger on it. Do you have a few more photos of both #1 and #2?

SO upon reading up here at these the sprigs you all are referring too? This Blue has great color, fuzzy feet and looks great except for the comb he has no bleeding of the copper on the chest only on his head and starting to get some on the wings. What do you all think?

Also what is up with these white feathers? Will they go away with the molt or not?

Kim, Wish everyone reading the thread would take a look at the wing carriage on these two pullets and the young male, this is about as good as we can get the wing and what is wanted.

Comparing the two females #2 has what you want if you are looking inside the imaginary box that we are taught to look for by the oldtimers. Look at the way she stands really good back angle and the tail looks to be just right shape and angle. She just has the look that we are all looking for in a show female. The has the look like she knows she is where it is all at. With the Blue male single mated you should be able to raise a good starter flock of pullets. The shape and look of her head is really outstanding from my view point.

Would be nice if some others would comment. I know there are a few APA judge on BYC.

A word of caution to people running young Guinea and poultry together. I have had the Guinea peck the points off the young chickens so be careful. I never run the two together as chicks.

What points do you speak of? I am curious cause i have raised my keets with my chickens and have never had an issue. I have even been able to train my keets which folks say is impossible lol. They have the routine down and i get them locked up every night along with the chickens. Maybe it's the coop which is very large and 8x8 with and 16 ft run who knows but they get along great. They free range during the days with guard dog protection. I also did not brood the guineas with chicks they were done alone and then integrated into the flock as young keets.
