Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning, all! HI, LISA!!! How have you been?

Patricia, I think you check list is AWESOME - just awesome, and good on you for being concerned about representing your sales birds with honesty - it SO shows you have integrity!!

I once sold two Marans pullets as layers, and did the same thing in my ad - really explained all their faults, but said they'd make nice layers. The person has stayed in touch with me for several years now, and told me that he never forgot that first impression, and it told him that I am fair & honest.

I think it is very important tell folks everything I can about my birds and their faults and what issues I have had in the past. Infact, I give them so much info, I'm positive the majority of folks just stand listening to amuse me, but all the while wondering if I am ever going to shut up and let them get in their cars and leave. LOL!

Ok......final verdict on my young Birchen chicks genders is 4 pullets and 2 cockerels. WaaaaaaHooooooT!
Going to go try and load a couple photos now if I can.
Silver is coming in nicely on the 2 males and Silver is coming in on the girls, but I can see some slight, very slight leakage coming through on a couple of the pullets hackles.

I must have BYC user difficulty syndrome.........................................photos seem to be an stumbling block with me lately.

That blue girl of yours from my girls' eggs looks just like my Bad Betty. * I LOVES HER* She may have earned herself the name Bad Betty, but she sure is a good Mamma.

Wonder what you would get if you crossed that Blue Copper boy (you posted a pic not too long ago) to her? Wonder if he would help with the female hackle color. As you know, it is something I haven't had great success with since I stopped using Gnarles, your males fafher. I have suffered even further hackle color loss...Bad Betty being a prime example. I will say this for her though.....what she lacks in hackle color, she well makes up for in the body type, leg feathering, egg color and her extreme crisp lacing on those beautiful dark blue feathers is to die for.

Ok, I will put her with the LIGHTer roo. I think I am going to try to put all the pullets with Copper in with my BCM roo and all the ones LACKing color in with your roo. Hoping that will give me good pullets and good roos.

I have a Olive Egger roo that I kept and he came from your other Blue Copper, he is much darker red, and he has that same color in his hackles that Vickie's is breeding to. I LOVE that color. Your Darker roo may make me some nice roos too. If space permits I will put some pullets with him too.

I am liking the size on these BLUE pullets. Not sure why I am only seeing it in the blues, but I like it.

OK, any opinions on this BCM chick as far as cockerel or pullet? It's 8 weeks old today. The comb developed early on, at about 4 weeks, but hasn't grown or changed since them.. I WAS leaning towards roo but now

It was the only BCM egg to hatch. His/her name is Furball LOL

Roo is my guess, comb and thickness of feet are what I'm looking at.
