Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Pink, I wanted you to see that Olive Egger Roo I got from your Darker Blue Roo.... what do you think, will he make some good Marans roos?

He just slipped by and grewout in the pullet pen. Took me a while to catch there was a roo in there LOL. I have a White Leghorn laying in there, I may leave her and see what I hatch.... might get some SUPER OLIVE EGGER

Patricia, I have the sister to your lavender roo... she is quite fluffy too. I hope I have some more growing up like that. I know where she came from. I am selling the roo this weekend, but not the hen

I have been hatching EVERYTHING that has been coming out of that pen... mostly lavs now

Bad pic sorry, but you can see her in the pic ABOVE too

That is a golden cuckoo in the bottom of both pics, I hatched her from eggs I got at Newnan. I am selling her and a GCM roo I have.

and last but not least

Vicki, this is the little cuckoo roo.... not so little anymore

His girlfriend does NOT LIKE him... she stays on top of her nest box so he can't get to her

I keep shoeing her off, but that only works for a minute. His legs are LIGHTLY feathered and she has no feathers on her legs.... but worth a shot.

OK, any opinions on this BCM chick as far as cockerel or pullet? It's 8 weeks old today. The comb developed early on, at about 4 weeks, but hasn't grown or changed since them.. I WAS leaning towards roo but now

It was the only BCM egg to hatch. His/her name is Furball LOL

I vote pullet. For 8 weeks, that is not a lot of comb nor does it seem very pink in those pictures.

So good to hear that you got some rain Vicki!!!!!! I hope several other parts got some as well. Good Lord knows we need it.

Donna~ I would not use that roo for making Marans............NO NO NO! Just use him for making Olive eggers. I do love the color of his hackles but it is not worth the genetic mess he will add to your birds. Stick wtih the pure Blue Copper Marans male. :)

Sorry, This roo made the Olive Egger roo... I think it looks like this roo would make some good Marans roos. I like the coloring on the Olive Egger roo, If I can get some Blue and Black Coppers that nice, I will be FLYING

My goals for next year, more copper in the pullets and a line that produces nice males.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for clarifying ..........I was confused. :) Yes.....DEFINITELY give this darker roo some girls for test mating. So this guy came from me too huh? He sure does resemble Lil' Bill ALOT!!!!!!! Wouldn't that be da bomb if he was from Bill Sr's blood?

This is the closest I've gotten using my camera/phone. S/he is pretty skittish and the hardest to catch LOL I'll try when I get home this afternoon though.

Gnarles would be the daddy, but I had 2 hens in there with him that were my Bill Sr.'s first gen. dtrs. so there is a HUGE chance Bill's blood runs through this bird. Infact, I would count on it as it was my goal to breed Bill's blood into every bird I had here....and I finally have with the exception of my Splash girl, Darryl. She is my only remaining original pure Davis blooded bird. This darker boy does not remind me in any way of anything Gnarles. When I look at the photo of him on the screen it's eery like I am standing outside staring at Lil' Bill. If you ever have extra eggs from this boy that you would like someone to test out........all you have to do is holler. :)
