Hatching tonight (on day 24, no less), I have a small handful of chicks who I hope will be my first generation of "olive eggers." Marans and Buff Orp roos over Easter Egger hens. Here's the one who's hatching right now!

And just for fun, here is a Marans cockerel's take on a "bucket o' chicken."

Me too! I just hatched a dark, single comb, so probably NOT an olive egger. I have four more green eggs to go, plus four marans eggs and one turken/marans, just for fun. The turken egg is not pipped, so I hope it hatches last so I don't mix it up with "real" marans! Any hints on how to keep it separate until it hatches in case it hatches while I am asleep/away?

If you figure it out, let me know. I'm always amazed at the people who have their eggs marked and chicks banded immediately--I think they must "man the incubator" 24/7 toward the end!

OMG...OMG!! I have an answer for once!!! YAY...I think this is my first REAL contribution to the BYC board. I probably learned it here, though.

FOOD DYE!!! Take a small paint brush, or toothpick or make-up brush, dip in food coloring, or veggie dye and brush and paint on any part of the little ones that are already hatched. You can even color code if a couple of breeds are hatched that look similar

If you want to separate in the incubator, a nice little piece of cardboard in the center of the bator.

OMG!!! OMG!!!!!! Guess what!!!??? Mother Nature took care of it for me, LOL. She put beards on both the Easter Eggers. I will file the food coloring gene for future reference though... I have different lines I want to keep track of. I am thinking of making "hatching stalls" to put in the hatcher when I set up for next time, and write on them who is what. I do try to be handy at hatching time, but sometimes you gotta take a shower and go to work! (in the real world)

Just wanted to show off how quick these little buggers grow. I brought them home on Nov 8 ( I posted their baby pics earlier in the thread) and here they are today. The big white one is a young roo that watches over them for me while they are outside.

Wanted to post a couple of more pics but for some reason it wont let me. I'll try later.

Well, I am about to attempt the Great Marans Transfer of 2008, pulling the Marans out of the general flock and into a separate run. Wish me luck and Godspeed. If you don't hear from me again tonight, it means that they've overpowered me, and you should send help.

I don't think they're going to take kindly to going from completely wild and free to a large enclosed run, but since everyone is getting to point of lay, I don't see as I have a choice.

Here we go.
