Oohhh Katy, I wish we were all so fortunate, that when we first ventured into Marans, in our ignorance, we could have gotten such quality birds that lay such beautiful eggs our first time out! It does take good selection and breeding to have such nice stock, and have eggs as Show Quality as that! You must be so happy with your birds! Those are really lovely eggs!
Unfortunately, many of us here found out about true Egg Color and Marans the hard way. We got birds first, then researched the breed and found out the some lines of Marans dont quite measure up, or some have found that their Hatchery birds dont lay very dark eggs either? Some are just seeking some reassurances that their eggs are still pretty....and sorta dark, arent they?? Pretty, Pretty eggs, mmmmm.
Some of us have decided to get deeper into the Marans breed, for the dark eggs and the rich history of the bird itself, and will continue beyond the "pretty egg" stage. I am purchasing "real" Marans now, not unknowns.
As the saying goes, something like this, I believe, anything less than a four on the Marans scale doesnt qualify as a Marans, no matter what the variety. I agree, there are alot that dont meet the measure...but we're happy to share here....it's been fun sharing on this thread........everyone has been so helpful and shared with each other. The pictures are lovely, and so is the diversity between the birds and the eggs.

Not quite sure how to take your post.
I've had my cuckoos for 6 years so I think I'm in it for more than just the pretty egg color. The birds themselves are great....some of my favorites.
I did quite a bit of research before I got my first ones and I was lucky to find a breeder who had nice birds. Unfortunately he is deceased now.
I was just showing that all cuckoos don't lay a lighter colored egg just as all Black Coppers don't always lay a nice dark egg either.
Oh, Im sorry, I can be confusing? I didnt mean any disrespect or anything negative...in re-reading it, I could seem to come across that way. Text. Hmm. Sorry.
You've really have had Marans/Cuckoos a long time, I totally respect that you would know alot about the laying patterns and typical egg color of the Marans more than most of us!! I've only had the Marans I've had for a year. I was really lopsided on my end, getting my birds first, then doing the research! And when I got my birds, they were just from local people with "iffy" lines. Boy, did I have it backward!
Although the breeder you got your first birds from is now deceased, for those who are now venturing into the breed, Do you recommend a personal choice of Breeders for Quality Birds and Superior Egg color? Even a couple of recommendations would be helpful to steer people in the right direction? I know I really want to make the right decision....I'm on Bev's list, but so is everyone in creation! I'm getting some more "off breed" Marans for love of their type (Golden Cuckoos) but who do you think really still has ACCESSIBLE marans anymore, where you can actually buy eggs, nice dark ones, and actually get good birds from them...birds to be proud of, from good lines?
Sorry if I sounded offensive. And I am even worse in person! Whoosh!
Take the gloves off man! Ooops, there I go again! Nah, I mean really, I dont mean to be a bitter pill...I have communication issues...I type before I think, it doesnt always come out right???
