Oohhh Katy, I wish we were all so fortunate, that when we first ventured into Marans, in our ignorance, we could have gotten such quality birds that lay such beautiful eggs our first time out! It does take good selection and breeding to have such nice stock, and have eggs as Show Quality as that! You must be so happy with your birds! Those are really lovely eggs!

Unfortunately, many of us here found out about true Egg Color and Marans the hard way. We got birds first, then researched the breed and found out the some lines of Marans dont quite measure up, or some have found that their Hatchery birds dont lay very dark eggs either? Some are just seeking some reassurances that their eggs are still pretty....and sorta dark, arent they?? Pretty, Pretty eggs, mmmmm.

Some of us have decided to get deeper into the Marans breed, for the dark eggs and the rich history of the bird itself, and will continue beyond the "pretty egg" stage. I am purchasing "real" Marans now, not unknowns.

As the saying goes, something like this, I believe, anything less than a four on the Marans scale doesnt qualify as a Marans, no matter what the variety. I agree, there are alot that dont meet the measure...but we're happy to share here....it's been fun sharing on this thread........everyone has been so helpful and shared with each other. The pictures are lovely, and so is the diversity between the birds and the eggs.

I got my my first egg from one of my cuckoos and the color was all at one end.
I wish my camera was working. It looks like someone took a brown egg and dipped it in cocoa powder.
It looks just like a thick powder on the small end of it.
That end must have been stuck in the paint chute longer.
However, I can't wait to see how it looks when she gets it right, its a pretty dark reddish color.

Not quite sure how to take your post.

I've had my cuckoos for 6 years so I think I'm in it for more than just the pretty egg color. The birds themselves are great....some of my favorites.

I did quite a bit of research before I got my first ones and I was lucky to find a breeder who had nice birds. Unfortunately he is deceased now.

I was just showing that all cuckoos don't lay a lighter colored egg just as all Black Coppers don't always lay a nice dark egg either.

My cuckoos are directly decended from hatchery birds..They were free as the eggs were givin to me by a friend and I hatched them..Three are laying so far..The first pic is the first hen that layed..In the second pic the first two decent eggs came from two different hens and the last three lighter eggs all came from the same hen..Hers are noticably lighter..I figure the rest will probably be a split of light and dark layers..I hope to find a good line to cross into mine so I can improve..

Ruth, I was wondering if you are marking the birds.
I have heard that you should mark the darkest eggs and if a roo hatches out of the darkest eggs those are the ones you want to breed.
Or did you just set only the darkest eggs?
I am just curious because mine haven't started to lay and I was wondering if anyone else practiced that method of hatching and if thats the way to go.
Now I have no idea if this is accurate or not, I heard it on a marans board though.
I don't know if its strictly for egg color or conformity to the breed standard but I would suspect that its for the egg color.
Any info is appreciated.

I put every one of their first eggs in the bator. Wasn't even sure they would be fertile but they were large and not the usual small first egg so they all went in to see what would happen. All but two out of three dozen were fertile and are developing/hatching. This is the first batch to hatch so I'm not worried about keeping up with which one came from which egg because I'll probably just let them join the free ranging flock and use their eggs in my egg baskets.

However, once I start hatching my breeding stock I had planned on trying to hatch only the darkest eggs and to also try and figure out which of my currently laying girls lay which eggs. But personally I like the splotchy and speckled eggs and variety of color and characteristcs. To me, it's what makes them so fun. Having all dark eggs wouldn't be nearly as fun.
