I have two BBS marans hens that are laying mostly non-fertile eggs, even though they are in a pen with two roos and a total of six hens with those two roos. Those two slackers are pullets that are just starting to lay and the roo is a young cockerel (July) just starting his first season. These girls are larger and narrower backed, and the blue one is more of a bronc and the splash one is cooperative. The roo seems like he is a good roo doing a good job, so I will have to just keep on keeping on until they figure it out. It stinks to have a bator full of great looking eggs and then pull half of them a week later for non-fertility. I don't want to eat them after they have cooked for a week in the bator. I wonder if I could boil them and feed them back to the girls? Anyone know why this would be a bad idea? The are lighter colored eggs, but they are XL, even though they are newly started laying pullet eggs. At this rate they will be laying emu eggs by next year!
I have a cuckoo marans hen that so far seems to have infertile eggs also. I put her first four in and none of them seem to be developing. I have 5 roos to 12 hens right now and I know she has been "caught" by at least two of them on more than one occasion. I think I'll wait awhile to incubate any more of hers.
Tsagirl, the chicks with solid black heads look like Black Coppers. The one with a white spot looks Cuckoo. No clue as to gender. I can't tell till they are older and the girls start painting their toenails.

Well, I checked her crop in the morning and it was empty! It was so full the night before. They have the Layena and Flockraiser available all the time in their big feeders. I think they really like hen scratch and think it's a treat. I also think they eat all kinds of garbage when they are free ranging. Lots of grass and thats's fine I guess, but also lots of dirt and grubs. You are probably right she may have a larger appetite now that she is laying.
Ok, I need help. I have 1 blue birchen cockeral and a blue pullet. Everyone else is black copper. I LOVE the look of the blue birchen roo(still feathering in) but don't know what to do with him. Would he be OK with the one girl come spring? Should I just stick a couple of my other layers with him just so he isn't so rough on her? I am trying to plan my pens and normally with just a pair I wouldn't bother, but I really love(did I say that already
) his looks. Is a blue marans ok to go with him. I haven't been able to find much about the blue birchen.....
Hi everyone! I'm a new BC Maran owner and I bought 4 but they sent an extra chick off of Eggbid they are from the Bev Davis line. They are now 5 1/2 weeks old and I was wondering if I have boys or girls I think I have 1 boy and 4 girls
. I'm posting a picture of one of the girls because they all look the same except the one I think is a boy.
I also bought a dozen BC eggs I bought from muddergoose that will be hatching the end of next week I hope.
I have 7 BCM that are 5 weeks old today. I have 5 hens and 2 roos. The roos combs are much bigger and redder and they are starting to get little waddles. I'll take a picture tonight if they will copperate and post. I also have 9 that are a couple weeks younger and I'm still in the guessing stages on them but keeping my fingers crossed for lots of pullets
I also got mine (as chicks) from muddergoose and you won't be disappointed. They are top notch.
