Well it's day 23 and no marans chicks

! I don't understand it. I had everything right on the whole time. There where chicks wiggling around in the eggs on day 20 and 21 and they never pipped

. I really wish I knew why! Six of eight of my RIR eggs hatched with no problems at all. This is very frusterating seeing this is my second round

. At least I bought eggs from a very good source! Looks like I'll be waiting even longer. Well I guess I'll go sulk some more. Good to see there are alot of nice looking new chicks! Have fun!

Man. That's a bummer. You know, why don't you just ask her to incubate them for you. She does that for people who are nearby her so you can just stop by and pick up the chicks. I think it is like $15 bucks extra. Totally worth it.

Ya drom it's a MAJOR bummer! Thats funny that you say that because I just sent her an email asking if I could pay her to incubate them for me. I just don't want to go through all that again "although I will if I have to". We'll see what she says. I'm really hoping she says YES! Now more waiting

Ok - here they are. I've included head and tail pix. The tails on the pullets are longer and tend to point up while the cockerels are shorter and tend to point down. The pullets are also showing the copper coloring

Pullet - 5 weeks old

Cockerel - 5 weeks old. His comb is actually redder than it appears in this picture.

That is so disappointing. I was afraid that would happen to me so I did spend the extra $ and bought chicks. I hope your seller will agree to incubate some eggs for you. Good luck

Aww Chef, that's a bummer

. I know EXACTLY(well, almost since I did get 3) how you feel. I got 14 gorgeous eggs from Richard(MaransGuy) and they looked awesome. Shipping did a number on them. I only got 3 and one was because I helped(it ended up being the only pullet). The ones that did make it to the hatcher(moving around) just didn't make it out of the shell

. I have had quite a few batches and the hatch rate hasn't been any better than the araucana. Here are the pics of the scrambled ones, made me want to cry

it makes me sad hearing all these stories of eggs not hatching. I didn't know any better, never even hear of marans until I bought eggs... had a broody, and when Tipsy started laying, I had another broody and hatched some of her babies... simple as that. I have been collecting a small flock of hens just as broodies, ten of them, and sometimes I think I should just have my "good chickens" and then I read stuff like Chef and klf73 losing so many of them and all of a sudden my broodies look a lot better to me. Heck, I just got some serama eggs to test and a couple days ago a silkie decided to go broody and presto, I put the eggs under her and forget it for three weeks. Whatever happens, happens, but I know they have their best chance ever under her, better than my juggling act with a Hovator 1602N with a turner and no fan and sometimes paying attention, sometimes not. I hope I get a few nice seramas! Anyhow, I'm keeping my broody bunch and trying my best to work on getting better at the styrofoam incubators. I get about a dozen eggs a day to practice on right now, so sooner or later I will get it right more often than not.
