it makes me sad hearing all these stories of eggs not hatching. I didn't know any better, never even hear of marans until I bought eggs... had a broody, and when Tipsy started laying, I had another broody and hatched some of her babies... simple as that. I have been collecting a small flock of hens just as broodies, ten of them, and sometimes I think I should just have my "good chickens" and then I read stuff like Chef and klf73 losing so many of them and all of a sudden my broodies look a lot better to me. Heck, I just got some serama eggs to test and a couple days ago a silkie decided to go broody and presto, I put the eggs under her and forget it for three weeks. Whatever happens, happens, but I know they have their best chance ever under her, better than my juggling act with a Hovator 1602N with a turner and no fan and sometimes paying attention, sometimes not. I hope I get a few nice seramas! Anyhow, I'm keeping my broody bunch and trying my best to work on getting better at the styrofoam incubators. I get about a dozen eggs a day to practice on right now, so sooner or later I will get it right more often than not.
