I got some eggs from oblio13 today, and I think he's crossbreeding turkeys with his Marans.
These eggs are H-U-U-U-G-E! I can't wait to see what I get...here's to lucky hatching!
On a side note, at least half of my Marans hens have begun laying eggs with no bloom. What is going on? Am I not feeding them something that I should be? I worry about them, because they don't get to free-range as often as the Orps. Some of the time, they don't even put the "paint" on the eggs, and sometimes they do, but then no "shine." Help!

The colour not being on the egg some days is not so unusual. Some birds just seem to do this....
I don't think it is a problem.
We have the same thing happening with glossy eggs & matt eggs. At present we probably have about 50/50.
We moved house twice in one year prior to buying our farm. This the first year I've had the chance to investigate. Initally almost all of our Marans laid large glossy copper coloured eggs....currently the number of matt eggs is on the increase. Another interesting thing seems that all of our extremely dark eggs are matt, but ot all of the matt eggs are exceedingly dark........the glossy eggs remain the rich shiny copper colour. .....which is also curious. Maybe the glossy egg is a recessive trait.
We have not previously been able to track eggs from each individual hen & know precisely which hen was the mother of each chick. I am tracking this now & hope to find out about the glossy eggs amongst other things.
Guys...in the interest of sharing knowledge and lines to keep the ol genetic pool as clean as you can I started a thread as easy reference for where our Marans come from.
Please share your experience with your particular line and feel free to update as you and the birds grow and change This information is not easy to find and more and more people are getting into Marans everyday...Thanks!!!!! www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=155981
