Well A pril f ools day has certaily been fun!... and of course I picked today to catch up about 200 pages of this thread... well I think I still have it figured out.
every time I get marans this is what happens to me I get all roos
Marans seem to have a reputation for this. Logically it doesn't really make sense; one would expect an equal chance of the hen passing on a w chromosome as a Z.
The first time I ever came across a one time Marans breeder (British type dark cuckoos) they said they'd stopped breeding them because they threw too many cockerels. It has been reported quite often on e-groups over the years & I thought it seemed that way with my first copper blacks. Since then I have not noticed any such correlation. Anyone else noticed any imbalance between numbers of cockerels to pullets?

I must be doing something wrong/right - I got one rooster and five hens when I hatched my black copper marans? Oh, and the little Bent, a very disabled little guy that didnt make it more than a few weeks. I worry all the time that something is going to happen to BC, and I only have the itty bitty Morrow chicks to improve my lines. Ah, Dark Eggs...the lengths I go to so that I can see them in my nest buckets!
