I got a project I want to try to work on, but it is not marans, so I guess I can't spill the beans here.... Anyhow, part of the equation is in the mail as we speak. Depends on what hatches from that whether or not I can go forward with my FANTASTIC project.

The mille fleur pattern takes three things: something to make the red color, something to make the black color, and something to keep other patterns from showing up in the feathers.

This is done with the mottling gene plus the Columbian gene, plus either wheaten or partridge or duckwing.

Marans have both Columbian and wheaten varieties, but unfortunately no mottled! So if you could find some Columbian Marans (very rare!), then the only other hard part would be finding a good mottled candidate to add.

Does any body have Araucana eggs or chicks for sale. I raised the real thing about 12 years ago, had sickness in the family and had to give them all away. I would love to raise them again! I'm in Dallas, is there an Araucana Club in the area?

I have mottled javas... not very maranish, because their eggs are pale tinted and their legs are yellow, but the body type is okay, and single combed.... I bet it would take a few years to get any decent egg color back after THAT cross... whew! I can see why there are not a lot of other colors in marans. It always comes back to being about the eggs!!!
