Well, isn't that unfortunate for me. I bought two strands, one clean legged strand, and one feather legged strand from two different breeders. I did notice the stripes on more of the clean legged chicks. I'll have to check them out again tonight and take a better look. Thank you for the information, as I'm new to this breed and still trying to learn.

WOW!

I can only hope my BCM will look as beautiful as those.
How old is that "cockey cock"?

Thanks, 60acres! Duke was only 20 weeks in that picture, so she should fill out quite nicely by fall. He's quite the gentleman, very laid back and easy to work with. I feel very fortunate to have such a nice roo!

...The girls are oh so pretty too, they all have that gleam in their eyes!

or is that the reflection of mud?

..the rain hasn't stopped for a week & 1/2 here!

I am lucky, all my chicks are still inside.

I bet it would take a few years to get any decent egg color back after THAT cross... whew! I can see why there are not a lot of other colors in marans.

I've been making a few colours of Marans (& Orps). Those where it is necessary to outcross, as you said, suffer terribly in egg colour. You mentioned mille fleur. Thus far I have one poorly marked irregular mille fleur pullet (i.e. no genes for spangling or columbian) her egg colour is barely better than a dark Rhodie egg. I think the idea is to fix the colour & type then cross back into a dark egg laying colour & so on.

60acres - yep, it was a VERY muddy day the day I took the pics. It' finally beginning to dry up here in Michigan!

That girl to the back/right is pure Wade Jeane; I'll not be using her in my program, as her eyes are the wrong color and she has WAY too much copper coloring. Her frame is also quite light; I like a nice, stocky bird for Marans. It's too bad, because she's a sweetheart of a bird. But, she'll make pretty eating eggs for my egg sales basket!

Good to hear that. She will do well for the breakfast table!

Do you sell them out of your house or do you take them someplace?

Wynette,

Thanks for letting us know about the Wade Jeane pullet. I noticed right away that she was much differnet than the rest. I hatched some Wade Jean birds a month ago and it looks like I'm going to have a pullet like her. She won't be in my breeding program either. It's too bad because they usually lay a very dark egg. Also, they are likely to have some Wheaton genes in them to cause the excess copper coloring. Males from the Jean line frequently have too much copper coloring in their breast for the same reason. All the rest of your birds are gorgeous! I hope some of mine turn out that nice. What line did they come from?

Wow - he's pretty! I hope my guy gets more copper like him. He's a little over 20 weeks now and still hasn't developed his saddle feathers. He also just started crowing (its only two sylables and sounds like an owl)
