Ok, you got me, who's Tara? Is she going to post pictures of the babies?

Tara's from the Marans Chicken Club photos...Her chickens got killed by racoons so I sent her eggs.. She went to the ohio show with her girls.

Okay not the greatest pic in the world but here is one of my little Blue boys hatched out a month ago and his LITTLE sister right next to him. She was hatched out the same day and look how small she is. Hope she catches up.

Either she's ended up dwarfed or that's a failure to thrive chick. Every now and then I'll get one that just won't grow or feather in normally like all the others - say one or two out of 100 or more a year.

Don't know why it happens, it just is there. I don't have the time or money to feed one that's going to be months behind and may never do well due to internal issues I can't address, so they're culled. That and god forbid it finally does grow out and I end up with eggs or a gene that makes all from that bird, that slow to grow and fail to thrive.

On a flock strength standpoint that bird is not going the right direction.

Thanks!
None the less, I just love her. She is spunky and holds her own with the others. Absolutely hilarious to see her go after a 2 month old cockeral that thinks he can boss her around. She will be going into the laying flock where she will spend the rest of her days putzing around and will not be used for breeding.

well clearly she is tiny but mighty and fortunate to be in your pen. Also, you know, there are Marans breeders who might highly prize her as there are several people trying to work on bantam varieties right now. So if she does end up staying significantly smaller than the others, maybe you should try to find a small rooster for her from the same line.

Drom- this is something that I have thought about, wouldn't it be cool to have some bantam BCM's. Can't wait for her to NOT grow up now..lol

My first eggs. I bought some BC and Blue copper Marans chicks from Bev Davis about 6 months ago and the 2 girls (one of each) have just started laying this week.

I am thrilled. Egg size and color has been consistant this first week.
The eggs in the lower two rows are from my RIR and the upper two rows are from my Marans girls.
