because, I been working on these barred olive eggers for a year and read and memorized every post i could on here about barred genetics. I found out it is sex-linked, then learned all what that entailed. Then I put it into practice and figured out why I was getting the results I was getting, and how to get better results with what I ended up with, then read back on the genetics posts some more, then I UNDERSTOOD IT finally!

Here is an example of my F1 barred EE roo. He is heterozygous for barring. Crosssed to barred pullet, half of his offspring are barred, half are solid. Half the barred are male, half are female. Same for the solid ones. That part I learned from "doing" instead of reading. At first I was STOKED to have a dozen barred pullets set aside to grow out for next year. Then six of them crowed...

so i was down to six, plus one from a later hatch....

Hi,

I would really appreciate some help/advice on these Marans chicks I hatched out.

In the first two pictures there is a chick that has alot of brown-red. Does not look like your typical Marans. When I asked the woman who I purchased the eggs from (ebay) she said it was just early copper coming through. Is this true and is it bad or doesn't make any difference?

This is also the batch of chicks that one of them has fused toes on each foot. I asked her about this also and she said she had never heard of that before. Considering her postion in one of the Marans clubs I would think she would know about this issue. I am just trying to decide on the trustworthyness of this person.

Here is a picture of two chicks. One is greatly undersized. Will it ever amount to anything?

Here are some that look typical, but I am wondering why there is such a variation of white on them. Does the white indicate better/worse color?

Some chicks are born with more brown on their heads. I *suspect* that these chicks will end up with too much red on their chests, but I do NOT know that as a fact.

As for the toes, that is a relatively common problem in this breed. In fact, toe fusion and short toes are genetically linked to feathered legs, so it's going to be a problem in any breed with feathered legs. I've got some references about that around here somewhere, if you really want to see them.

ETA: Let's also make it clear here that I don't believe that any of the officers of the Marans Chicken Club USA sell eggs on ebay.

Hi Amazondoc, sorry that was my mistake. She is VP of the Marans of America club. That she would tell me she has never heard of the fused toes makes me doubt anything and everything she says. How very frustrating.

oh /heshe knows alright. Anyone breeding these birds know. I got an order from Cree Farms and at least 5 of them had fused toes. They said they did not notice, at first I thought maybe but after talking to a few other people I know that is not the case. I am not sure who your eggs are from but most of the chicks that had the fused feet died in my group (I had sold them all but the owners all stayed in touch) This has been a big discussion and a big problem in the Marans world and I dont think anyone is unaware of it who breeds these birds. As for Cree farms, people say great things about them but I wont ever buy from them again. I do know their birds are gerorgeous though. But this for me was an honesty issue as some of my chicks did not even have toes just stumps, now how can you not notice that when packing them up. Please leave detailed feedback on her in ebay. There are 2 people I bought from that I left feedback about on e-bay that were great I even updated the feedback so others would know they had the real deal. the chicks are doing great and all look good. Egg color was great on them also.

Honesty is an issue and that just screams dishonesty. Here was the reply:

We have had a few with the brown heads, just early copper. When they get bigger it just comes out into copper feathers. We don't have any other stock that is breeding age other than the black copper marans. Wheaten chicks are yellow. As far as the two toes together, that is a first. Never had any and never heard of any. Might be a good idea not to breed that one, Just let it be a yard bird. I don't have any idea why that one would turn out like that. All the breeding stock has perfect feet. Umm. I'm clueless on that. Well I'm so glad you did have a good hatch. God bless, Jeanette.
