I guess there is diversity... Like everything else in nature.. and in Marans... Splish Splash... Tom-ate-o .. Tom-ott-o... Just showing off my particular Splash marans... She is a beauty!!! Thanks PinkChick!!! Nice Birds. Hey what do you think about my copper necked question... Do you think that the darkening on the neck says something about the melanizing gene?

oops, sorry ... we posted at the same time.

Pinkchick: Have you done any work with Lav's...If so: What rules that set of genes and how does it show up... who could we ask? I never really thought about how different her markings were because of the diversity in the Andelusian blue world. I see markings like this all the time with my cochins...

They almost look Lavender.

And at birth they do look lavender.. They will have very few light stripes on them. They very much hatch out to look like the fuzzy butt picture on Tdgills page...The one of the new babies butts.

Which brings up another thought.... If I breed her to a splash and get more that come out lavender looking.. Am I on my way to a Lavender Marans!!!!! ha ha (I think buff is necessary here though) Since splash to splash acts as lavender to lavender (self blue) then I would be able to reproduce her... (I think she is rather pretty) ... If so... Tdgill... send me over a Rooster that looks like our hens... ha ha.

Jan~ To my knowledge lavender is not a color variety in Marans. I do not and have not worked with lav's...not to say that it wouldn't be fun to try. I would almost be inclined to say that your bird resembles a blue a very light blue more so than a splash, but as you stated before you get all blue babies from her when you hatch out her eggs. This is from a cross with your Black Copper roos correct? If that is the case then she is a splash. I agree about the diversity of the Andalusian blue, I feel that is is very diverse.

yep pinkchick.. all blue babies... her feet and beak are a give away to the lack of black also...(she must have hatched upside down and the color went to her neck!!!) ha ha. Want a couple babies from her to play with?.... and I know there isn't any Lavender Marans... Now Why??? HMMMM??? She actually lays a really nice egg for a splash... that is why I have kept her... That and in case I couldn't find a turkey for Christmas.. ha ha (just kidding here) I haven't had any of the babies show coppering on their heads but I haven't kept any for more than a week. If you are interested in the playing with the genetics... I can give you some eggs or some of the babies at the next swap... Good egg color... tightly stipled.

When do you have swaps and where. I am in Idaho and would love to come to one. I just need time to plan. Expecting any soon?

Haven't heard... That is usually Bil's department... To yucky here yet... It isn't a huge thing..... Just a few of us local... Hey Pinkchick... Arrange something up your direction... We could maybe attract a few more marans enthusiast... Say Vancouver or something.... Maybe then Idaho can come.

Come to think of it I have an older splash hen in the laying flock who after a very long molt and being bare backed for almost a year now because she is one of the favorites, her neck coloring has come back in very similar to your gal, but the rest of her body (what she has feathers on) is still splash.
