OH, thank you for asking. It's doing great. Temp and humidity hasn't budged! Yes, you can fit a lot more eggs in that Suro because it rocks. I have to lay mine on the floor because the floor moves back and forth and rolls them. So I can't stand them up. I did squeeze one more egg in though. I don't have a candler either. I suppose you have to buy a really good one to see inside the Marans eggs. When are your chicks due? Are they due next week?

Please don't get me wrong, there's alot of birds that don't meet alot of breeds standards. It just throws a huge curve when you have to meet both an egg standard and a conformation standard. And the egg standard is where the patience is. I won't know which cockerel is throwing the darker gene till their baby girls grow out. I wish they would just have a tag that gets hatched with them sayin PICK ME I AM THE DARKER EGG BOY!. lolol

You're so right, It's hard. I won't really cull any of my girls in this spring hatch until I see what they lay. I will wait it out. Unless they're missing a leg or a wing

But I have to say, when I think of any kind of use for these birds as something other than a back yard flock for fun, I am kind of interested in the idea of cultivating the birds as layers of gourmet eggs. Nobody talks about that so much really. But that's what they do in France. They sell dark eggs in the Farmers markets to eat. Again, I don't think there would be any money at all in it. But it might be fun to sell dark eggs in the Farmer's market

I think it's a great idea !

Doesn't that sound fun? There's a Farmers Co-op in the county I live in and the produce from these Farmers is sold in the sheds and markets. Some of it is certified organic and some is just from local small family-run farms.

I am sure there are certifications or permits and rules you have to follow in order to be able to sell anything that human beings will be eating.

But I might look in to that.

I gotta tell ya .... I have no intention of selling hatching eggs, at least until I know what I am doing. So, at this point, all of mine are simply eggs to eat and enjoy. I have taken some to work, and get all kinds of comments and compliments. Heck, that's what eggs are for .... to eat! These Marans eggs, and all the shades of pretty, are just great!

I have also considered the organic route. I am still looking into that aspect, as well.

Depending where you live, IF in a big city, one can build up a good list of folk who will come to your house to buy eggs. My single customer buys 3 dozen at a time for $10. Hey that $10 will feed my chickens for a day. lololol

hatch date is the 16 for me , i have 21 eggs so i should have 20 roos and a hen

That's what I'm fix'n to do. We sell out at $5 a dozen at the farmers' market, and that's for plain ol' Barred Rock eggs.

In your area, I would think think lots of people would be interested gourmet eggs.
