Im going to try & breed blue wheatens. I understand you breed a blue hen, with a wheaten roo, & then breed the resulting blue hens back to the wheaten roo.
We don't have any true blue roosters available yet, so using a blue hen & wheaten roo is the way to go.

I don't work with Wheatens but I do work with blue and splash. My guess is that you could use a Splash Copper rooster over a wheaten hen, but this is only a guess! Hoping someone that is working on them comes by to help you out with your question.

Geebs~ Sorry this is late........HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

This is not good news about the partridge, I'm sorry to hear this.........but it may help shed some light on some peeps questions about strange brown chicks popping up that have a partridge pattern.

What are you going to do with your birds from said breeder now that you know this? How do you think that it is going to affect your breeding program? Are you worried about it? Sorry for the 20 questions....I'm just an inquiring mind!

I actually want to sell PURE Blue Wheaten hatching eggs but I don't have a Splash Wheaten, so next year that will be an option. Otherwise I'll have Wheaten / Blue Wheaten eggs, and Wheaten / Blue Wheaten / Splash Wheaten eggs.

Pinkchick Not worried about my breeding program. I am not a big seller of eggs or chicks. It is a personal journey. I always do test hatches and have learned to test out the roos I like so I am not worried about it much at all. I do think it takes two genes to bring it out, I have my theories but as with everything surrounding marans... More research is necessary. I have maybe 3 dozen eggs that ever left my place.

The rooster obviously won't be in the breeding program....Not for marans anyway.

I never sold any eggs from him so I have no apologies to make. I guess this underlines the importance of "test hatches". I did check out my purchases from breeders very carefully and even then... this can happen. Chickens are sneaky... I hold no malice toward the breeder....I hoping I am a single incident.

Be careful ppl that your wheaton are actually wheaton... I don't breed for wheaton so when the partridge showed up I thought it was how wheaton presented... NOPE!! I feel kinda foolish about that now but I have never owned either color bird before in any breed as chicks.

Good 20 questions.
