Time has come to use R00ppert, a Kevin Jeanne C-1/Wade Jeanne, 7 months old cockerel. R00 has been fighting & BEATING UP BRUNO. Can't have that, so he has been permanantly moved to my Valentine/Buboltz lined bird's pen, in the shade behind the pole barn. Far from causing trouble. I planned on moving him there anyway.

I think he has two "lines" of BCMs. I hatched 4 from his Bev Devis line and two are large, one is just about their size and one is much smalle would try setting out more than one dish of feed just in case some of them are getting in there.

I'm starting to believe that they are from three different lines with Bev's being the largest. I truly believe that that small ones are not that way because of lack of food. They're a pretty docile bunch. Thanks for the insight everyone. I'm hoping this will be a fun 4-H breeding project. Brenda

I have heard it pronounced both ways and also heard Marr-annes. To be very honest with everyone I say Ma-RANZ and always with and "S" at the end but was recently corrected by my daughters high school french teacher, who stated that it is pronounced Mare-uns, but when asked if she knew of Marans France she had no clue.

Oh, I thought the second syllable had the closed nasel vowel sound not the open one

I have run it though the audio translators on-line in the past and they do pronounce it with the open vowel sound like most are saying here. But, I was thinking that was wrong.

Just google Martha Stewarts video on marans... She says it out loud and I believe she went to get them.. So that would be the official french pronunciation if anyone wants to check it out of youtube... The s is silent in her pronunciation.

OH that is just not right. Nobody's allowed to beat up Bruno.

Pretty boy

Didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to mess with Bruno. lol
Up till now Bruno hadn't met anyone who would try. I guess R00 is one nasty boy.

OH, I have that video bookmarked, I will go back and listen.
Martha would never pronounce the name wrong, even if her estimation of her bird's egg color was slightly overstated.

Actually they were very pretty Cuckoos as I recall. And I think that maybe Resolution might have been involved with that but I don't know for sure.

I believe you are right about that Res part... and HE would never mispronounce either... He is a darn wordsmith.. among other things.

Ok, I've been pronouncing it over a few times, and I think its more "gutteal" than nasal...sorry.

they only thing I can add to this is I have a buddy that has BC marans from the jeanne line and many of them are brown when little, but later turn into a classic BC maran when mature. As mature birds they color up very nicely and seem be one of the more strikingly pretty BC marans I have seen. Wish I had some pics of his mature birds to show. Maybe someone out there has some pics of mature BC marans from the Jeanne line they could post. I understand wanting to get the best for show, as my daughter plans to do the same, but it will be tough to beat the Jeanne line in the long run IMO,
