Littledel...thanks...

I will gladly show you some of my proper color adults that started out brown.... They are wonderfully colored adults. Thanks for the input. I have 7 in the brooder that all hatched brown and they are from correctly colored parents and I expect correctly colored babies as I have had before... I will get you pix in a while when I am back.

You know, I just noticed one thing I didn't really pay much attention to before with the Kip Calculator.

The calculator has Brown-red birds in a different category than Black Copper.

Maybe everyone already knew this. I think snowbird mentioned something about the two being different some time back.

Anyway, I ran across it when I was crossing two Black Coppers who have recessive Wheaten genes in the calculator.

So, the calculator describes Brown-Red as a Gold-Necked Birchen and Black Copper as a Red-Necked Birchen. I don't know how I missed that before. (black Copper is dominant when you cross the two)

And also, when I crossed two birds that have a Black Copper Phenotype but an ER/EWh Genotype according to the calculator you will get a certain percentage of both Gold-necked Birchens and Red-Necked Birchens.

And some of those Gold Necked birchens are ER/ER and some ER/EWh. I need to take a look and see what is different with the ER/ER Gold Neck and the ER/ER Red Neck.

So according to them these are the different types of ER/ER birds you can get from a cross between two black coppers with recessive for wheaten (ER/EWh)
I just listed the pullets.

ERER co+co+ db+db+ pg+pg+ ml+ml+ Cha+Cha+ MhMh di+di+ Ig+Ig+ cb+cb+ i+i+ bl+bl+ Lav+Lav+ C+C+ Mo+Mo+ b+- s+- Choc+-
Gender = Female, Ratio = 1/32 = 3.125%, minimum of animals to breed: 32
black patterned red -necked/birchen

ERER co+co+ db+db+ pg+pg+ ml+ml+ Cha+Cha+ Mhmh+ di+di+ Ig+Ig+ cb+cb+ i+i+ bl+bl+ Lav+Lav+ C+C+ Mo+Mo+ b+- s+- Choc+-
Gender = Female, Ratio = 2/32 = 6.25%, minimum of animals to breed: 16
black patterned red -necked/birchen

ERER co+co+ db+db+ pg+pg+ ml+ml+ Cha+Cha+ mh+mh+ di+di+ Ig+Ig+ cb+cb+ i+i+ bl+bl+ Lav+Lav+ C+C+ Mo+Mo+ b+- s+- Choc+-
Gender = Female, Ratio = 1/32 = 3.125%, minimum of animals to breed: 32
black patterned gold -necked/birchen

There are actually 9 different genotypes/phonetypes you can get from the cross. There are also ER/EWh birds with either Gold-necked or Red-necked genotype/phenotype

And the rest are wheatens; black patterned red wheatens or black patterned gold wheatens.

Now that must be a red-necked birchen-

Mahonri, my roosters only get the mangled tail when they are in a pen together. The bachelor pen has some messy tails. The Rooster I have with my girls looks well groomed.

I've had him in a pen with two other roos! No wonder.

I don't get the birchen joke... not a good example of an FBCM????

Oh No, I was just referring to the posts I just put up before yours on the calculator with the different ER/ER genotypes.

I have absolutely no idea what all those symbols (letters) mean. I wish I did know.

The difference the calculator is spitting out with those three Er/Er birds appears to be MhMh, Mhmh, mh+mh

Well, I looked it up and it appears to be the gene for Mahogany red:

Mahogany red :Mh/Mh (and Mh/mh+) it enhances present red into dark red.

Mh is very strong and it does 3 things

- Mh makes s+ (gold) dark red;

- Mh has a columbian like action on black pigment;

- Mh restricts black to the outer ends of the feather, by extension of red.

If Mh is absent (theoretically) the gold would be more pale.

So, from all this can I assume then, that you can work with the three ER/ER types and actually modify and balance the color on ER/ER birds

It looks like those three birds will not throw any ER/EWh birds at all when they are crossed. Just ER/ER birds with varying degrees of copper color.
