OK, here is the egg with two new araucana pullets and one older hen who is still laying.

I know which older hen is laying and of course saw the marans egg deposited. The marans pullet has eight sisters, I believe they are hatchery birds. These are smooth legged girls. I'll keep an eye on her egg color, my question for the eggsperts is, does she qualify as a marans?

One of the newly laying araucana pullets sure has a blue egg. I can't wait to see which one it is. I have not caught her in the nest yet. One lays a very pretty olive egg.

Krista,

The blue is a newly laying pullet. As soon as I can figure out who she is she will get assigned a partner. I am sure you'll want some from her. I do know it is a smooth faced pullet. My tufted girls are finishing molt or are a bit too young yet. I have tufted boys though.

The cuckoo marans I have are a mystery. I bought them as chicks at a local swap last June. I am quite sure the person I bought them from just orders large loads of hatchery chicks to resale. If I see her in the future I'll ask her where she orders from. The pullet that laid that egg is very large, she is nearly as big as my Jerseys.

Her sisters are a bit smaller and similar in size to each other. Anyway, that big pullet better lay some larger eggs!

I don't have a marans cock and will cross one of my black giant boys with these girls and also throw an Ameraucana in with them sooner or later.

Note, with the bitter cold and snow here I can report that these cuckoos are not letting the weather get them down. They bulldoze pretty well through the powder.

You throw her in with a tufted boy and of course I want some

. I lost a bc chick today(3 days old), I noticed yesterday it didn't eat/drink with the others. I tried dipping it's beak but it didn't seem able to swallow. I am thinkig it just had a defect

Jen,

I might take you up on a cockerel/cock in the spring. I have no room right now and still need to find homes or cull some of my other breeds. I have a very small batchelor pad and I just pray they get along through the winter. Winter is so bad here I cannot make any plans for new birds or hatching eggs until mid March.

Krista,

March will be pairing up time here. I am betting there will be more than one pullet throwing nice eggs. They are just getting started.

I plan on showing a furture Araucana 'baby daddy' in January down in Mass. If I get lots of nice hatchery Marans eggs I will get them to Richard for the Marans egg display at that show. Any or the rest of you New Englanders going???????

We have 4 Cuckoo Marans (took me forever to know what they where).
They are all laying (and have been) about an egg a day

Golden Cuckoo recipe:

1. Breed a Black Copper roo with a Cuckoo hen, keep only the best looking Roo for your new line.

2. Breed a Cuckoo Roo with a Black Copper hen, keep all the hens.

Breed the Roo from 1 to the hens from 2 and you have GOLD CUCKOOS

They may not breed true for a few generations, but its a start!

I'm working on a line of Gold Cuckoos and Wheatens, but they are works in progress.

I do have clean legged Cuckoos and Wade Jeane Black Coppers.

I'd love to hear from others working on Gold Cuckoos.

Greg
