That's a beautiful color.

I got two new roos today! These were given to someone I know for eating, because they didn't have any use for them. Funny thing is, I already went to this person's house a couple months ago and bought some of the hens that go with these roos!!! I have blue black splash marans pen that only has a splash roo, and I needed this black one. And the blue cuckoo marans roo, I want him for my barred EE project, plus he has a tail! SO many of the cuckoos have slow feathering gene and don't have tails. Anyhow, introducing, black and blue. I would like to say I am up to ten roos, but I reorganized today and unloaded a lot of birds, streamlined, reassigned pens, complete upheaval in honor of finding these two. Notice my extremely avant garde photo studio. They are standing on top of a garbage can and have a piece of string from a feed sack tied to their feet so they couldn't fly off!

Those are the most beautiful Roosters! Upheaval was in order!! That black gentleman is, well, a stud!! Who could eat him??

I need to start planning pens for my projects too - the Frizzle Mille Fleur D'uccles have their pen, and the Cuckoo Marans have theirs....I need another for the Black Coppers...and then whatever other Marans I manage to get this upcoming year!!

Yeah, I found the black roo. He is scrawny and stunted because of how they were kept, VERY overcrowded, stressful pen that was mostly roos. The other splash that I did not choose when I was buying a few months ago was also in the "eatin'' bunch, and when I chose mine, that day you could not tell them apart hardly. Well today when I saw him, the other splash had not grown at all and was fully a third smaller than the one I have now, which all I did different was.... drum roll please.... FEED THEM!!!! I am hoping the black one will at least produce bigger, even if he is not really big himself. My FIRST hope is that he is not done growing and still has time to catch up some. The guy I got him from didn't want to turn loose of him because they like eating black chickens better, (it's a cultural thing) and I had to promise him eggs or chicks back to start his own breeding program, which totally made him change his tune and let me have him.

I got fresh pictures today.

Here's my alpha stinker-boy. He was actually very well behaved this week.
When he moves toward me now, I just reach down and brush the top of his comb with my fingertips. He totally steps back in shock and looks at me like "whaa-what'd I do?!?"

He looks so innocent in this picture.

This naughty bird has too many points on his comb. But he has a really nice tail and saddle feathers.

Oh, once you've started feeding him up, he'll look fat and sassy.

Edited to add: I like his tail-perfect angle on his tail

Your naughty alpha roo looks huge! I think he could feed a family of twelve, if he ever ticks you off enough. Have you ever weighed him lately. I'd be curious to see how much he weighs now, and how much he gains in the next say, three months or so.
