Well Sara and Jennifer, I'll trade eggs with you anytime. The only thing I have ever been able to hatch is 85% roos. I've tried everything except trading with someone who has the opposite "problem." This is one case where I wish I had your problem!
I hatched from Richard. Sadly it is the only one I have. She is standing with her buddy Pipsqueak who is 1 week older. I took this picture last week - now she is like a foot taller and all legs and wings. She stands almost as tall as my 6 week old chicks.
1 out of 12? Was that shipped from TX? to where?
Thanks
~4kidZ
PS~I've got 6 cuckoos (from angi at H&H) pipped this morning WOOHOO (fingers, toes, arms, eyes crossed!)
Pbj, all you need is one little girlie to start. You can always find a roo. Make sure you get one from the same line! Be picky. She is adorable as is that little pipsqueak.
Bikerbabe. Awwwwww. I feel so bad for roos. We have a Buff Orp cockerel that is the absolute sweetest little guy. He is in his tweens and so many others are afraid of us and he just runs up, stares and lets you pick him up.
I am dying to go home to see how my hatch is doing but can't get home today until around 5 at the earliest. Probably best, though. I have an awful time keeping my paws off the bator during hatches.....
It is only a week old in that picture. It has an itty bitty comb but I have had girls hatch with itty bitty combs before on other breeds. SHE is now about 2 1/2 weeks old and the only thing that has grown are her legs and wings. I REFUSE to believe anything but that its a girl
ETA: 4kidz - were you asking me if it was 1 out of 12? If so then yes, I got one out of 13 actually that hatched. Several did not develop at all 2 quit around day 3/4 and four just failed to fully hatch. One was stuck in the wrong end and was too large to turn around so I'm pretty sure it drowned. Not sure about the other three.
Oops...yes 1 out of 12 (er ... 13) hatched...and that's from Richard in Mass? And what state are you in that they shipped to? I ask because I'm in FL, and have some shipping out next week.
It surprises me because the marans eggs usually do pretty well in shipping because their shell is so thick. At least, that's been my experience. My last shipment of 8 gave me 4 and the box was crushed on the way here! I was happy to get any.
I'm in Iowa. Not sure what happened but am thinking it was humidity related. His eggs are wonderful and I hope to get some more. I have slowly started putting her in with my 6 week olds (3 millie roos, 5 silkies and a frizzled cochin) They (BCM& serama) are in a bird house in the bigger brooder. When I let them out of the bird house the millies tend to *test* them and that BCM beats them down. The serama just runs under the frizzled cochin and hides.
