I'm looking for (ideally copper) marans in Finger Lakes region, NY. Does anyone know of a breeder there?

I wasn't going to get them because mypetchicken says they are not winter hardy, but there are so many folks on this thread from verrrrry cold parts of the country that I think that must be wrong.

Any thoughts on winter hardiness?

My 12 weeks olds have been out side in freezing temperatures with a red light in a chicken tractor since week 7 of there lives and before that they lived in a brooder in a unheated shed. They are very winter hardy although it may be more difficult for people in much colder areas but they do just fine here.

Hi Kats

Welcome to BYC. There is a Marans group on Yahoo that might be a source for you. Sterling Farms is in Upstate New York and Sue has Copper Blacks and Blues of good quality.

As far as winter hardiness, they are able to withstand this Maine winter. However, my Roos do get a bit of frostbite on their combs. Other than that they are doing well in minus 30.

Henry! The Mountain School looks incredible and it appears that you are quite the student! Your mom and dad must be so proud of you! Of course you know they can't let you bring your girls, for quarantine issues, so does that mean your folks are going to care for your birds while you are gone?

One of my Davis Roos just went after my youngest son 7 (who I am sure deserved it as he can be a naughty imp

) and my 8 year old daughter grabbed the roo and put him in his place. By the time I got out there he was sitting there humbly with my son petting him, and my daughter continuing to scold him.

I'm OK...a New Year's eve I will never forget...that's for sure. But I gotta say, posting here and to the Marans chicken club USA board made it a whole lot easier to deal with. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for understanding and kind words.

Now, I'd say I probably like kids...as I manage all kinds! And yours a just about as cute as can be!! A-very-dorable!

I can really see the whole "girl chews out chicken" scenario!

I am looking for BLACK MARANS with feathered shanks and toes. I would prefer to purchase them in the NORTHEAST sector. Does anyone house and sell them?
