Does anyone else's marans eat pine shavings? Mine just sit there and munch on it like it was food. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with there wierd poops. They free range a little during the day and have access to food all the time. Why would they want to eat this?

Oh, no mine have never done that and I use shavings in their coop. I am assuming they end up ingesting a little anyways when some gets mixed in the food dish. But they don't actually eat it. They will go after styrofoam though. I had a styrofoam cooler sitting on my porch that I had to move because they were taking chunks out of it.

all mine do that...marans and quail, EE'ers and banties.... I wonder why they do that too!!! most of mine didnt have any "bedding" amterial where they came from so maybe its because its new to them!!!

Well, that makes perfect sense actually. My thoroughbred mare always had her stall bedded in shavings for years. But when she was getting close to having her first foal, we bedded her foaling stall very deeply in straw. She had never had straw in her stall before and she immediately started eating it.

I guess she didn't realize at first that it wasn't hay.

I was thinking the same thing. They eat out of the bed part like they were eating out of a trough. I was thinking that they may have been fed in a trough like fedder before I got them. They were already a couple months old when I purchased them so its possible. I just don't want them to get sick from it. If it's a problem then I want to remove it! Thanks

Well out of the 15 eggs I set I only ended up with 4 RIR. The eight marans eggs didn't wanna come out. Whatever the case was though she gave me seven more eggs!

So this time I bought a dehumidifier and the turbo fan for my bator. Now everything is EXACTLY where it needs to be. I cant say enough about bayhorsebonnie. She is the real deal! She has beautiful eggs and is a genuinely nice person. I highly recomend her if you are looking for quality marans eggs.

So the next hatch date is on the 27th

We'll see what happens!

Oh, sure I will! I feel really lucky to have gotten these three hens! I got one Black and two Crele...I'll get pics soon, they're settling in to their private coop right now, so not going out with the rest of the flock for a few weeks...I've been looking for a while for some myself, not so easy to find! Hey, if I had a roo, we could have more!!
Eggchel says they're really skittish, more than most breeds. I am naming them Skit, Zoe and Frenick. They have a neat floppy comb and white earlobes, yet they lay a dark egg! Tricky birds! But they are sleek looking, the coloring on the crele is faded/shady, like a lighter version of a golden campine....the Black penedesenca is very trim, they are a mediteranean bird, so they have that thinner, narrow, lean look. Rather stately, you know? I'll get egg pics when they lay more! Thanks for asking! Another egg Fan!
