Wouldn't it be nice if someone created a color calculator for the Marans varieties:

This site looks so fun and has a bunch of really great links to other sites. This is from BYC member Henk69:

I even found a French chicken color calculator but I couldn't find the Black Copper color pattern. I just don't know enough about poultry genetics to be able to play around with it.

Here is a US site that I found there as well:

I love that! I still dont get it, but I love it....I have to figure out what bird is what dot, way too deep for me! I need to get my way mathematical DH to help me with the chickens so I can do some future broadcasting stuff, dont I? Then again, I had wanted to plan for pretty EGGS not so much pretty BIRDS, but I keep veering off cause I just love the BIRDS too!

At least my wish list is being satisfied, I should have my stuff by Spring/Summer of this year, and be able to have my projects and programs up to start sending stuff out more independently this coming year!

Drom - I didnt realize you were so close to my part of California! My MIL lives in Natomas - Sac area off of I-80, the Northgate off-ramp...We're down there all the time....sounds like we even head your "direction" sometimes! Dont worry, we wont plague you! My beasties are a little too overwhelming to just "drop in" on people! I'm too nice for that!

That Blue girl is breathtaking, I just wanna cuddle with her!

Now I really cant wait for the Blue Copper Marans eggs Im getting from Will Morrow of Whitmore farms. Even one close to your little girl and I will be a pleased chicken mom!

I'm wondering how a person can tell the difference between a black marans and a black Penedesenca....

Well Marans are larger bodied and have brown earlobes. Pendesencas, are more stream-lined and much more upright. They are built more like a Leghorn. (Un-officially they are much crazier as well and have the personality of a fish...)

And most importantly comb type. Marans are single combed while Pendesencas have a modified single comb known as a Carnation comb or a King's comb.

You can see a decent shot of a roo's comb on Feathersite:

Hope that helps some.

Thanks I am not sure If this girl will ever get coppering but she and her pure black sister sure would bring awsome genetic material into a black and blue Marans line. You could make your own line from Wade Jeane culls. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite birds

They are very friendly and want to be held even at this age which I think is unusual my layers are friendly but when they were young they were crazy so I wonder how these girls will be when they lay probably like puppy dogs

I don't know which of those pictures is the cutest Henry. I think the prize goes to the BCM snuggled up on her shavings bed.
They look like very happy birds

And look at their pretty coppery eyes. They will match their hackles
