Here are pics of my first batch of BCM chicks from my own flock:

It's hard to get a good pic when taking them under the heat lamp but they are as cute as can be. A few already have copper coloring on their head and those turned out to be my two roos last time.

So when can I tell if my lone ostrich is a guy or gal? I was thinking roo but do they get that copper coloring on their heads right away? So far this guy is pure black with one white wing feather. S/he is 6-7 weeks now.

if you post a pic I am sure you will get an answer. The comb should be able to give it away instantly at that age.

I'll be willing to bet that the one that's turned and giving me the stink eye is a little roo. He has the copper coloring on head, along comb, and at one day old already has an attitude.

mine were the same way, darn roos have attitude right outta the shell

Ok - so here is Oscar the Ostrich:

I'm fairly sure its a boy - but there is no evidence of any copper coloring on him yet. When does that start to show up? He is 7 weeks old today. The comb though large is still light pink on the bottom and yellow on top. Do pullets ever get large combs early with this breed?

Here he is with his best bud Pipsqueak (taken about 2 weeks ago) Pip now easily stands under him and often does.
