Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

The best way to end up with Marans that lay dark is to lurk a little on the forums and threads and see who/where people are getting their dark egg laying stock from. It's true Henry's hatchery birds do have nice dark eggs, but most hatchery birds don't. If you want a good chance of getting darker eggs you really need to buy from a private breeder. If you lurk on the forums and threads for a while, you begin to get a very good idea of which breeders are sending dark hatching eggs out to people, and more importantly, which ones are sending the eggs that are producing stock for people that lay dark eggs in their 1st generation.
People post pictures on this thread of the eggs breeders send them all the time. It's really so helpful for all of us to see what people are sending out. We are less likely to waste our money and time on light egg laying stock because of it.

Of course, having said that, your bird sounds like a wonderful happy layer. So dark eggs aside, she is a treasure!

She is! I love her, I wouldn't care if she didn't lay any eggs

I keep thanking her everyday for the scrumtious egg. The yolk is so good, I was licking the plate

Very ladylike huh? I had never tasted a fresh egg before that!

I second that. My very favorite marans lays the weakest peach colored eggs, (HUGE for pullet eggs!) and is the calmest, most inquisitive, self made lap chicken I have in my flock. I don't spend a lot of time handling my chickens or trying to tame them and make them pets, but she just always comes over and gives my pants leg a little tug when I sit down on a milk crate inside the run to watch "chicken tv" after I am done with chores. I just love the splash color. She is my only splash hen and is just... the best! I will have to get around to posting pics of her eggs, compared to the other pullet eggs. Her very first egg was an XL and she just keeps on knocking out one a day ever since. I will probably hatch some of her eggs just because she is such a nice bird, not as a "marans' wannabe. I am curious to see if any of her chicks could lay darker... hmmmmm.....

Completely OT -- I'm probably the only person around here who can eat six eggs a day and still not get high cholesterol....of course, they're BANTAM eggs......

..... I love eggs! Over easy or sunny side up -- just gimme that runny yolk!!

Yes, I love them sunny side up! And when I boil them, I only boil them for a couple mins so that the yolk is still a little bit liquid in the center and looks bright deep orange!

Yep, her legs are yellow. So, that solves the mystery! She is a barred rock. Oh well, just add more color to the egg basket
