Honestly, the eggs are really light, but beautiful none the less. Nice size, but they are not a four on the Marans scale, thus techically unless they're really washed out by the flash, they're not Marans colored eggs...but the beauty is that they can still hatch out Pure Golden Cuckoo Marans, and just need improvement in the egg color department. Right now alot of eggs are lighter color, during the colder days, difference in winter diets, etc...I would be proud of them...Golden Cuckoos do not lay the darkest eggs anyhow and are a work in progress, although I know some of them can lay a decently dark egg. I love the Golden Cuckoos too, and hope to have some also!

I posted the color scale in a little earlier post today, you can compare it yourself? And its actually the old one, the new one is alot darker....Tina

thanks Tina! i appreciate your honesty!

Man, I cant help with the sexing of the chicks, but those are some beautiful birds and pics! The color patterns on the wings is just amazing to see developing at such a young age, and your step by step pics are awesome! The last two do seem totally different than the others, more of a pastel/blended coloring to them, almost Fluffy! It will be very interesting to see how they develop!

How are the Wheaton dispositions so far? They look so calm? I have four Cuckoo Marans chicks right now that seem like something out of Jurassic Park, and they act like we're trying to kill them as well. Weird, my others have always been so mellow?

My cuckoo marans was somewhat skittish when she was a chick but once she hit POL she didn't seem to mind us as much. I can usually pet her now but God forgive me if I try to pick her up.

I don't like the temperaments of my older wheaten pullets -- the ones that are one generation removed from Presley's farm. They are the wimps of the flock, and they spend a lot of time in the coop even when everyone else is out tooling around the pen. These baby chicks, though, seem pretty good. They are little popcorn chicks when I first appear in their view, but they are fine once my hand is in the brooder -- and they're fine and curious when they're out of the brooder. I hope for good things from them!

Niether can I! lol Dying to have some lovely dark eggs from them and hopfully many chicks from them.

Jabba is a serious Ladies Chuck lol He's bangs on the back door and if that dosn't get your attention, He sits on the kitchen windowsill, crowing, while I'm washing the pots.
He's a really stunning boy, Huge big cuddley Cockeral.

my marans egg was suppose to hatch this weekend. all the other eggs i had in there from my serama, cochin, r/r all hatched but my marans didn't. thought i'd give it a couple more days, but day 23 came and i gave up. i cracked the egg to see if it had even developed (since it was the first egg of the season) and there was a fully grown chick in there. it would have been a splash. the chick never fully took in the yolk.

i have 4 more due to hatch tomorrow. i like to dry incubate which works great for my other eggs, but i raised the humidity this time to see if that would make a difference. the last time i hatched marans was in a styrofoam. i now have a cabinet and i'm trying to figure out how to best hatch them.

I am sorry about your splash chick - I hope your other four do better. Darker eggs can be odd, at least they have been in my incubator...the Yahoo groups people do different tricks with their own eggs, but I would seek advice directly from them, I am a novice in that forum (only lurking one year + you know?)...It could have just been a problem with that one chick!
Fingers crossed for you!

And Hey!!

I have eggs due this Thursday, 2 of them are BBS Marans from OntheSpot!! Oh, and some other cutie patootie mixes as well!

More to be posted as they develop!

Oh - Update on the Whitmore Farms Blue Copper Marans Eggs - Still Not here yet

- Thats 8 days....lost somewhere in Fed Ex land!!

Oh my Gosh! Fed Ex land says they're here in my town! Now if the driver will come to my house and driveway, not the neighbors! Last time he passed my CLEARLY MARKED/ ADDRESS POSTED IN FRONT/UNGATED DRIVEWAY to go next door through a chain link gate, opened the gate, past a barking dog, and try to deliver my package to the neighbors, all while I stood there next to my car by my house watching the whole thing!!!! I was dumbfounded. I called out to him and said I was waiting for a Fed Ex package, and did he have it....he brought it over and said, oh yeah, this is the right address, isnt it??? Yup, it is!! On that big post right there! It sure is!! I'm waiting today to chase the Fed Ex guy again. I have time off work this week cause the kids are out school. Good thing, cause I have to chase the Fed Ex guy around the neighborhood!

tina, is the seller still not conversing with you? if it's fedex, it's trackable. has he not given you the tracking number? if so, you can call fedex and tell them the originator's address and destination address (your address) and they can find the box without the tracking number.

hope this gets resolved for you soon.

and yes, i understand it's hard to hatch those marans eggs sometimes. i've had them drown before from too much humidity. it seems to be a complicated science.
