I use an old projector as my candler...makes it very easy to see into very dark eggs. Got it free from one of the freecycle list in my area. Some people use maglight flashlights and such but I have tried them and prefer the old projector.

Thought I'd practice taking pics with something which does not run away.....I hope.

Please will you camera experts tell me what is the best way to photograph Marans eggs? I've heard things like outside without flash or is it inside without flash.....or should I use the flash....or zoom?

I am not used to cameras with no eyepiece & just a screen...

I've found that natural light, outside captures the color the most accurately. Indoors, at my house, is too dark and when I try to use the flash to lighten the picture, it washes the color of the eggs out. So far, I haven't been able to get a picture inside my house that shows what the eggs really look like.

My Black Copper roo was pretty obvious by his comb from the beginning, he had some brownish tinting on his wing, but was basically black until he got weeks older....the pullets were way blacker with only hints of the copper til they were well feathered out, then the glints turned more pronounced. One is still mostly dark with just hints of Copper....BC is very Coppery now though.

I asked about the color a month ago... fast forward to now- I'm still confused lol! I'm such a chicken newbie.

The oldest chicks- I'm down to just the black one, the blue one mysteriously died

I'm pretty sure he is pure black- they are 2 months old and he has no copper at all, he's got a bluish greenish tint in the sun, but nothing copper.

The really coppery young one looks like he is barred with copper in all the feathers that have grown in. Is that a type of Marans or will his feathers change? The wings, his chest... all of him is black and copper striped. I'd take pictures, but I cant right now. I think he's really neat, he hatched from a BC egg.

Nice hatch! I love hatch day!

OK now I have a question for y'all... I have some BC Marans that are at point of lay. Very pretty birds but NOT sweet. The hens are flighty and the Roo is a mean little stink. They are Wade Jean lines... anybody else see this? More than anything I love the birds I keep for having sweet dispositions so I am not sure how this will work out.

I am presently building them out a larger space and am hoping that chills them out some... or maybe they need chicken-prozac...

I will not enjoy these birds if they are flighty and no amount of darkest eggs will make it worth it... Maybe I will find a sweet cockerel to replace Mr. Meany with... or put him in a soup pot and drop the hens in with my super sweet Golden Cuckoos to learn some manners.

Suggestions anyone?
